Japanese police investigate cryptojacking case

Japanese authorities are on the trail of alleged wrongdoing involving the mining software of Monero (XMR) Coinhive

Cryptojacking, defined as the unauthorized use of devices to mine cryptocurrencies is a crime that affects thousands of users around the world. An alleged recent case in Japan keeps in alert the authorities investigating cybercriminals looking for an easy way to get money through software Monero (XMR) Coinhive.

The Japanese police presume that in their search to obtain high sums in the shortest possible time the criminals would have developed websites to install the Coinhive software on the victims’ computers, of course, without their consent. An activity that is punishable by law.

At the beginning the cryptojacking affected only the personal computers but now the users of any intelligent device are victims. It is estimated that in the last year the cases for this crime have increased considerably.

In Japan, authorities are investigating three suspects in the Coinhive case, including a web designer, to whom the Yokohama court is imposing a payment of $ 900 for the crime of illegally introducing the virus into computers.

According to information provided to local media, the suspects have defended themselves by noting that it is not a virus, but a method of traffic monetization, similar to the distribution of ads. The Yokohama District Court will continue the investigations.
