Japanese city of Tsukuba implements digital vote

Local authorities approved the application of a novel voting system based on blockchain technology and applied to social development programs

Tsukuba, known as the City of Sciences, approved the digital voting system based on the blockchain technology called My Number. It will allow citizens to cast a vote in social development programs.

Located at a short distance from Tokyo, the city approved a mechanism based on a 12-digit social security identifier, which will allow verification of the data before voting. The blockchain technology will prevent illegal situations, such as falsification of the vote.

The test carried out to verify the dynamics of the digital process was successful, despite the fact that some participants forgot their password, generating setbacks and bewilderment.

The procedure consists of placing the My Number card in the corresponding reader and then selecting the program of choice. The vote is immediately stored in a distributed decentralized register.

Among the participants was the mayor of Tsukuba, Tatsuo Igarashi, who indicated that the whole process was simpler than he had imagined. Undoubtedly, it is a mechanism to enhance security in voting processes as well as to avoid electoral fraud.
