Ivan Duque will promote blockchain adoption in Colombia

The recently elected president of the South American country said he focuses on the application of this technology in areas such as education, construction and electricity

The recently elected president of Colombia, Iván Duque, indicated in his first declarations his interest in the inclusion of traditionally excluded sectors such as construction, electricity supply, security, bidding processes and management of public funds in the application of the new technologies.

To achieve this, they will be based on blockchain technology and Big Data as key tools. Duque expressed his concern during an interview with the newspaper El Tiempo. He indicated that ICTs will contribute to the optimization of the quality of life of citizens as well as better goods and services.

On the other hand, the new president has launched the proposal to use Big Data in strategic areas of development and economic growth in the country such as agriculture, infrastructure, technology, health and safety. With this the processes will be transparent and will allow to avoid cases of corruption.

The Colombian Senate has already discussed the issue of the applicability of blockchain technology, as well as the use of its benefits, the establishment of the corresponding regulations, as well as the participation of entities such as the Financial Superintendency, the Bank of the Republic and the National Banking Association (Asobancaria).

An important precedent framed in the proposals of Iván Duque is the creation last May of the Colombia Blockchain Foundation, focused on education and training in cryptocurrencies and the entire blockchain ecosystem.
