IMF begins meetings with Venezuela to assess internal economic situation
After several years of suspended relations, Venezuela and the International Monetary Fund began an exploratory phase to reestablish ties between the two parties
Amid the current political situation in Venezuela, the International Monetary Fund held an off-the-cuff meeting with the country to assess the internal economic situation and the feasibility of resuming bilateral relations.
Some of the topics discussed during this meeting include the lack of official statistics, which hinders the IMF’s assessment, and the possibility of the country accessing $5 billion in Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), the use of which is currently suspended due to the international recognition status of the Venezuelan authorities.
Along with the IMF, other international organizations, such as the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), also held internal meetings with Venezuela, demonstrating the multilateral organizations’ interest in truly understanding the state of the Venezuelan economy and the technical challenges that any potential assistance from them would entail.
These meetings do not imply a pre-established plan of aid or assistance to Venezuela, but rather an evaluation of the technical and political conditions for moving toward such a scenario.
