IBM will use blockchain for augmented reality games

They pretend to use the blockchain to establish confidence about real locations and prevent malicious players from using false information for their benefit

The company has applied for a patent for a fairly complex augmented reality (AR) gaming system, designed to keep players away from dangerous physical spaces. It is expected to use machine learning and blockchain to build this structure.

The system will notify players whenever they approach an area marked as undesirable, such as high risk locations, culturally sensitive locations or places marked by their owners. IBM expects this to help gamers navigate away from problematic situations.

The documentation also highlights that once players accept the tracking terms of location information, the system may compare the user’s placement with a database of physical spaces marked as undesirable. That is, when a player approaches any of them, the system will notify that they are approaching potentially dangerous territory.

Creating a tool that directs participants away from restricted areas sounds like a great idea, but there are a large number of technological challenges to consider, especially with the use of blockchain technology.

Block technology tracks, stores and safely maintains transactions related to the location and other metadata of interest.
