IBM and Maersk adds first customers for their blockchain

The tool developed by both companies incorporated the Mediterranean Shipping Company and CMA-CGM

TradeLens, the blockchain system developed by the companies IBM and Maersk recruited its first two maritime cargo companies for the platform.

These additions are Mediterranean Shipping Company, the second largest after Maersk; and CMA-CGM, the fourth largest in terms of load capacity.

This Maersk and IBM tool also works with more than 100 supply chain operators around the world, in the shipping and transport of merchandise.

The achievement of bringing a pair of Maersk’s very large rivals to the IBM platform about a year after launch should not be underestimated in an industry with narrow margins for IT renewals and an inherent distrust among competitors.

“IBM and Maersk continue to be the sole owners of the TradeLens platform. The nature of an effective blockchain is to create an environment in which multiple parties, often competitors, want to coexist. Both CMA CGM and MSC are participating in the advisory council as part of the shared commitment to open governance.”
