IBM abandons its plan for facial recognition

The company announced that it will no longer continue to offer this type of technology, due to the possibility that it may promote racial discrimination

The company IBM announced that it will no longer continue to offer facial recognition technology, due to concerns about its use to promote racial discrimination.

Through a letter sent to the United States Congress, the technology requested the competent agencies to carry out an investigation to determine whether or not to continue using it.

“IBM strongly opposes and will not tolerate the use of any facial recognition technology, including technology offered by other vendors, for mass surveillance, racial profiling, human rights violations and basic freedoms, or any purpose that does not be consistent with our values ​​and principles of trust and transparency,”  said IBM CEO Arvind Krishna.

Krishna maintains that the company “strongly opposes and will not condone” the use of any technology for “mass video surveillance, racial profiling, violations of human rights and basic freedoms.”

The executive highlighted IBM’s work in defending the rights of American citizens, regardless of their race, color or creed, and the refusal to comply with Jim Crow’s laws of racial segregation in the facilities, in 1953, by then IBM President Thomas J. Watson, Jr.
