Huawei is part of new German 5G security catalog

With the measure, the European country seeks to create conditions of equality for equipment suppliers. However, it also challenges US requests to restrict negotiations with Huawei

Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei celebrated today the drafting in Germany of a 5G high-speed technology security catalog.

A spokesman for Huawei said before dpa that this regulatory framework will create fair competition conditions for all suppliers, referring to the draft of the project in Beijing, which does not put any obstacle on the way to the main network provider in China.

“This approach, which is based on facts and standards, is exemplary to address the challenges of global cybersecurity,” said the spokesman for the Chinese company.

The company representative said that a “cybersecurity politicization” only hinders technological development and social progress, without answering country security questions, indirectly referring to Washington’s resistance to the use of Huawei technology. The US government also warns other countries not to use Huawei equipment. The Chinese supplier of telecommunications equipment has always rejected the accusations of espionage and underlines its respect for current laws.

The new security catalog makes it clear that Germany does not generally seek to make it impossible for Huawei to participate in the construction of the 5G network. However, in addition to the United States, the European Commission recently warned of allowing companies like Huawei to participate in the mobile communications infrastructure.

According to the security catalog developed in Germany, suppliers must make a statement of assurance and promise that they will not send any confidential information abroad. The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) plays a central role in the verification of the components used. At the end of the year the approval of these rules will be resolved, which are also controversial in Germany.
