Huawei faces new US restrictions

The US government added 38 subsidiaries of the Chinese company to the "black list" in terms of access to technology and software in the region

The United States government intensified pressure on the Chinese telecommunications manufacturer Huawei by expanding the scope of the restrictions applied to the access of the Asian company to the production and supply of microprocessors. It also added another 38 Huawei subsidiaries to the ‘black list’ from companies with restricted access to US software and technology.

“The Trump Administration considers Huawei to be an arm of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) surveillance state and we have taken actions accordingly”, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said in a statement.

In this way, the State Department expressed its strong support for the extension of the restrictions applied to Huawei by the Department of Commerce, which will prevent Huawei from circumventing the laws of the United States through the production and supply of chips produced with tools acquired from the United States, after the Chinese company has tried to “continuously evade” the most limited veto implemented since last May.

The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the US Department of Commerce announced the expansion of restrictions on Huawei Technologies and its subsidiaries outside the United States to also include items produced domestically and abroad from American technology and software.

“These actions, effective immediately, are intended to prevent Huawei’s attempts to circumvent export controls by the US to obtain electronic components developed or produced with US technology,” the Commerce Department detailed.

Pompeo warned that the United States will continue to restrict most US exports to Huawei and its listed subsidiaries. “We urge allies and partners of the United States to join us.”
