Presidents of Latin America sent their words of congratulations to Gustavo Petro for his victory in the second round of the presidential elections in Colombia

After the announcement this Sunday of the victory of Gustavo Petro in the second round of the Colombian elections, the presidents of Latin America have sent their congratulations late this Sunday.

One of the first leaders to react after hearing the results was the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, who underlined that the victory of left-wing candidate Gustavo Petro in Colombia is a “joy for Latin America.”

In this context, the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, also celebrated Petro’s victory and said: “On behalf of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, we congratulate the people of Colombia for the democratic day held this Sunday, June 19, where the winner was Gustavo Petro. The destiny of our peoples must be one of cooperation and solidarity.”

“I am delighted with the victory obtained by Gustavo Petro and Francia Marquez with which the electoral process in Colombia culminates. I have just conveyed my congratulations to the president-elect for the trust that the Colombian people have placed in him,” he explained in the same social network, the Argentine president, Alberto Fernández.

Likewise, the former president of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has written on his social networks: “I warmly congratulate my colleagues Gustavo Petro, Francia Marquez and the entire Colombian people for the important victory in the elections this Sunday. I wish Petro success in his government. His victory strengthens democracy and progressive forces in Latin America.”

Similarly, the leaders of Bolivia, Panama, Honduras, Cuba and Mexico expressed their support for the newly elected president of Colombia in different ways.
