Google to pay taxes in Spain

The Spanish government announced the application of new taxes to financial transactions and certain digital services that include the Internet giant

The Spanish government has just announced a 3% tax that will apply to multinationals in the digital and technological industry that bill more than 3 million euros in Spain and 750 million in the rest of the world.

The giant Google will have to start paying taxes in Spain if its billing exceeds what is established by law. The objective is to maintain an equitable tax legislation.

This was stated in the Council of Ministers by government spokesperson Isabel Celaá, who indicated that the bills for the creation of taxes on financial transactions and digital services seek to raise more than 2,000 million euros.

Celaá emphasized that companies that provide digital services, such as Google, must pay the corresponding taxes in the territory where they generate profits. She supports her position on the need to eliminate the privilege of this company with respect to others that do pay taxes.

According to Celaá, the Spanish tax “follows the French model and its collection will be used to finance pensions and other protection mechanisms of the Social Security.

In summary, when the project is approved before the Spanish Courts, Google will have to pay 3% of the profits obtained by “online advertising, online brokerage services and sale of data generated from information provided by customers.”
