Google buys Fitbit to develop new projects

The network giant wants to create new tools dedicated to the pursuit of physical well-being and that also guarantee the protection of user data

Google announced the acquisition of Fitbit, the device company, with the aim of developing new tools focused on physical well-being that guarantee the protection of user data.

Fitbit is responsible for smart watches and activity wristbands with wellness tools. This is a goal “closely aligned” with those of Google, as the senior vice president of Products and Services, Rick Osterloh, said in a statement.

The technology giant already has its own developer ecosystem for devices, through the Wear OS system and applications such as Google Fit.

The manager emphasized the work of Google to protect user data, and affirmed that with the devices “we will be transparent about the data we collect and why.”

The company “will never” sell the personal information of users, and Fitbit health and wellness information “will not be used in Google ads,” says Osterloh. Fitbit users can review, change or delete their data.

“We plan to work closely with Fitbit to combine the best of our respective smart watch platforms and activity wristbands,” the manager concludes.
