Gmail prepares an alternative chat to Hangouts

The arrival of "Chat" to Gmail coincides with the progressive withdrawal of Hangouts

Google’s Gmail platform has made changes to its code with which it prepares the integration of a new chat functionality, both individual and group, which will be an alternative to Hangouts, similar to the current Meet function for video calls.

“Chat”, as the function is called internally, is the name taken by private chats between two Gmail users, while group conversations are known as Rooms, for both private and professionals profiles.

This has been warned by the 9to5Google portal when analyzing the code of the Gmail application for Android, in which it is referred that “there are more ways to connect and collaborate without changing applications”.

Chat’s arrival in Gmail coincides with the progressive withdrawal of the Hangouts brand, which had already been advanced in several technical documents from the company.

Hangouts grouped Google’s collaboration services, but now it has given way to Google Meet for video calls and Google Chat for messaging.
