Global Merck gets a blockchain patent to authenticate products

Merck, the oldest pharmaceutical company in the world, obtained a blockchain license from the United States Patent and Trademark Office

Merck, the German multinational, developed a system that uses a combination of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology to establish the authenticity of unique physical objects.

The pharmaceutical giant said in a press release: “The new technology uses machine learning to link physical objects to a chain of blocks through their own unique identifiers or fingerprints.”

The new license describes a technology that can identify and record a unique feature of a physical object such as its so-called fingerprint, including chemical signatures, DNA and image patterns.

Also, the company says that innovation can increase the security of systems such as supply chains, in order to eliminate counterfeiting. Reportedly, the technology is being developed at the Merck Innovation Center, the firm’s research and development branch.
