France fines Google for misuse of personal data

The French Data Protection Authority fined the Internet giant by 50 million euros allegedly for violating the essential guarantees of users

The Internet giant was fined by the French Data Protection Authority after allegedly violating the data protection policies of users.

It is the largest legal tax on Google, amounting to 50 million euros. The National Commission for Information Technology and Freedoms (CNIL in French) has justified the fine after determining a serious violation of fundamental principles in data protection, such as those related to transparency, information and user consent.

For its part, the multinational company has stated: “We are very committed to meet these expectations and the consent requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation.”

The CNIL emphasized that the case is delicate in view of the fact that it reveals important aspects of the private life of the users of the platform. Currently, customers are not aware of the actual scope of advertising or the personalization of ads on the network.

For now, Google has not disclosed the next steps in this legal process established by France, although it has indicated its commitment to maintain standards of transparency and control.
