Ford announces cut of 7,000 jobs

The measure, which will affect 10% of the workforce of the car manufacturer, will come into force in August of this year as part of its global restructuring plan

Ford Motor Co is in a process of restructuring that includes a reduction of 7,000 jobs in its global structure. Jim Hackett, CEO of Ford, broke the news to his employees via email.

The layoffs represent 10% of their general workforce in the midst of an action that will save the company US $ 600 million annually. It is important to point out that the measure will come into effect as of August of this year.

Hackett said the cut includes layoffs and voluntary departures. In addition, available positions will be frozen, which implies that there will be no new hiring.

About 2,300 workers will be affected in the United States. However, Hackett emphasizes: “To be successful in our industry and position Ford to win in a future of accelerated change, we must reduce bureaucracy, empower management, accelerate decision making, focus on the most valued work and cut back costs.”

Ford seeks to improve its profitability and boost product development, with the planned cuts in Europe, South America and Russia. At the same time, the manufacturer signed an agreement with Volkswagen AG to work jointly in the commercial Van and pick-up segment. Both brands also negotiate alliances for the development of electric and autonomous vehicles.
