Venezuela announced on Friday, July 17, that it had obtained access to $346 million of its own funds from the International Monetary Fund. The money will be used for recovery and to help those affected by the June 24 earthquakes.

This was reported by Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, who indicated on her Telegram account that the government remains committed to the families who lost everything during the two earthquakes last month and to the recovery of the commercial sector in the devastated areas.

It might sound exaggerated, but a large part of our lives revolves around our cell phones: photos, emails, online banking, social media, work, sensitive documents, conversations. That’s why ESET, a leading company in proactive threat detection, is sharing the steps to follow for a quick phone security check. This is extremely important for all users.

“In 10 minutes and with simple actions, you can detect risks, close unnecessary access points, and prevent problems before they occur. This significantly reduces the risk of your entire digital life becoming vulnerable,” explains Mario Micucci, Cybersecurity Researcher at ESET Latin America.

Minute 1–2: Update – The first step is to install available updates for both the operating system and the applications you use. It’s crucial to have the latest version installed because cybercriminals know how to exploit old vulnerabilities or weaknesses to carry out their attacks.

Minute 3: Lock – Activate device locking with a PIN, pattern, or biometric data. Ideally, avoid using common patterns or birthdates, and configure your screen to lock automatically as soon as possible. Physical access remains one of the simplest ways to compromise a device, since an unlocked cell phone allows anyone to access apps, emails, and social networks.

Minute 4: Delete – Review the list of installed applications and delete those you no longer use or recognize. Reducing the number of apps also reduces the entry points for cybercriminals.

Minute 5: Limit – Another important point regarding apps is to control the permissions they request. For example, does a flashlight app really need access to your contacts? You can check this in the “Settings” menu, then go to “Privacy,” and under “Permissions,” limit those you consider unnecessary or suspicious. According to ESET, the danger is clear: the microphone can listen to ambient noise, the camera can record without your knowledge, and location services can constantly track your movements.

Minute 6: Reduce – Decrease your attack surface by turning off Bluetooth when not in use and deleting saved public Wi-Fi networks. Both public Wi-Fi networks and active Bluetooth can be used by cybercriminals to intercept information or attempt unauthorized connections.

Minute 7: Enable – Activate two-factor authentication (2FA) on all possible accounts: email, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Google, Apple ID, etc. This prevents malicious actors from hijacking your account, stealing your networks and contacts, and accessing your banking services.

Minute 8-9: Back Up – It’s advisable to check if you have active backups (on Google Drive or iCloud), confirm when the last backup was performed, and enable automatic backups of photos, contacts, files, and system data if they aren’t already configured. Not all security incidents can be prevented. Backups are what allow you to recover your information, and if you don’t have a recent copy, the impact can be more severe.

Minute 10: Boost – Install a reliable security solution that provides protection against phishing sites and malicious apps, and detects malware in real time. Not all threats are visible: in fact, as users, we often don’t detect malicious links, dangerous apps, or suspicious behavior in time, and a security solution adds constant monitoring, reducing the margin for human error. ESET solutions, for example, include protection for online banking and payments, blocking of sensitive applications, and anti-theft tools to locate or lock your device in case of loss or theft.

“Cybersecurity isn’t about magic solutions, but about small habits that can make a big difference. This 10-minute security check is a step toward a better-protected device. Since most digital incidents occur due to minor oversights or carelessness (installing an unofficial app, not updating systems, a weak password), a good goal is to make this quick and concise check a daily habit. The young man was developing his science project for his high school, Bergen County Academies, in New Jersey (USA). In that process, he came across “research from the University of Hong Kong that used retinal imaging to detect autism.” Kang found it “fascinating and counterintuitive” to use retinal scanning to understand what happens in the brain. His research led him to obsessively investigate using AI, machine learning, and neural networks.

This led him to create RetinaMind, a technology with an 89 % accuracy rate that “uses deep learning models to analyze retinal images and determine whether a person has autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or if they are neurotopic.”

The student trained the model to compare different predictions made by various AIs in order to generate an average and provide a more reliable diagnosis, using neural networks specialized in image recognition.

His innovative tool incorporates heat maps that identify which areas of the retina were key to the diagnosis. With this breakthrough, it “achieved second place and a $175,000 prize in the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search 2026, positioning itself as a very promising technology for the detection of autism and ADHD.”

A memorandum of understanding signed this Tuesday, July 14, between Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Paraguay seeks the creation of the so-called “South American Single Sky”; an initiative for the integration of the regional civil aviation market and greater accessibility of air services among the participating countries.

Transportation authorities from the signatory countries met to advance the “gradual liberalization of air transport in the region, respecting the legal and regulatory frameworks of each state.”

Among the objectives of this agreement, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Ports and Airports, is “expanding the range of flights, progressively reducing regulatory barriers, and facilitating airline access to the markets of participating countries, in order to improve regional connectivity and increase competition.”

The four South American countries will create a working group with a one-year deadline to establish proposals for the gradual implementation of the Single South American Sky project.

Preparations are well underway, according to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the process. “The company’s timeline anticipates officially registering the operation between the end of 2026 and the beginning of 2027, once it completes its audited financial statements. The goal is to debut on the Chinese market during 2027, although the timeline will depend on both stock market conditions and the performance of the business itself.”

As a preliminary step to its stock market listing, the company wants to strengthen its balance sheet with a new round of private funding. In this regard, “it is reportedly negotiating a capital increase with new investors, based on a preliminary valuation of at least 480 billion yuan, equivalent to approximately $71 billion.”

Initially, they hope to raise 10 billion yuan, although the final figure could be higher depending on the level of interest generated by the negotiations among potential investors.

DeepSeek, founded in 2023 and controlled by the investment fund Zhejiang High-Flyer Asset Management, has become one of the leading exponents of artificial intelligence development in China.

It has gained ground in the market after “presenting a model capable of competing with the most advanced platforms on the market using fewer computing resources.” Currently, the goal is “to significantly expand its computing capacity to train increasingly powerful models. The demand for data centers and computing power has become one of the main bottlenecks in the sector, forcing large artificial intelligence companies to accelerate their infrastructure investments.”

This Monday, July 13, Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced the merger of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The official stated that the measure seeks to adapt to a new stage, with the appointment of international relations expert Félix Plasencia, who has extensive experience in diplomacy, as the new foreign minister.

“He will be responsible for directing Venezuelan foreign policy, defending our sovereignty, strengthening cooperative relations, and promoting peace diplomacy in the world,” a statement on Telegram indicated.

Plasencia replaces Yván Gil, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, who will now serve as the new Minister of Science and Technology, a position previously held by Gabriela Jiménez.

Point-of-sale operations in businesses in La Guaira, Venezuela, will be exempt from paying commissions for 90 days, according to the Venezuelan Banking Association (Asobanca).

In a press release, the association indicated: “The majority of private banks in the country have decided to exempt businesses located in the State of La Guaira, for a period of ninety (90) days, the commissions associated with operations carried out through Points of Sale (POS), with the aim of easing the operational burden and promoting local economic reactivation.”

Some 12,300 private banking points of sale operate in the port state of Venezuela, which represents about 40 % processing commercial transactions. “This figure shows the magnitude of the impact on commercial infrastructure – where businesses suffered severe damage, remain inaccessible or are in the process of reopening – and establishes the great challenge for the coming days and months: ensuring that this percentage increases progressively as the area advances in its recovery and stabilization.”

Asobanca will accompany the commercial reactivation process in the state, together with private banking in order to evaluate the particular situation of each business.

With an accurate diagnosis, it will be possible to review current credit conditions, “payment facilities and support schemes adapted to the real needs of each establishment.”
