The winning entry will be awarded a trip to Tokyo, Japan, to participate in the ESET World 2027 global cybersecurity conference. Prizes will also be awarded to the winners of each category. And, as in previous years, special distinctions will be given for each region (Brazil, Mexico, Andean Region, Río de la Plata Region, Central American Region, and South American Caribbean Region).

This regional initiative is supported by the  Fundación Gabo and the ACHIPEC organization (Chilean Association of Journalists and Professionals).

Those interested in participating can register in three different categories according to their professional development: Print Media, Digital Media, and Multimedia Media. Registration is limited to one entry per category. For evaluation and selection, the following criteria will be considered: the socially relevant approach of the chosen cybersecurity topic and its interest to the community, the originality of the research, the in-depth treatment of the information, the narrative quality, and the correct use of technical terminology. A panel of judges made up of renowned journalists and specialists from the region will evaluate all submitted works.

OPEC+ announced an increase in its crude oil supply of 188,000 barrels per day starting in September, following an agreement reached at the organization’s fourth meeting on Sunday, August 2.

In this regard, the seven member countries – Algeria, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Oman, and Russia – decided to continue their “policy of commitment to market stability by implementing upward adjustments that have added 940,000 barrels per day to the quotas, equivalent to almost 1% of global demand, since the price war began on February 28.

OPEC+ approved the further increase in its supply considering the geopolitical crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, which has triggered blockades on the distribution route in addition to low international reserves.

The organization’s delegates hope that production quotas will remain stable until the end of the year, “in accordance with plans to keep a third layer of inactive supply frozen after it was disconnected in 2022.” However, these forecasts could be altered depending on global market circumstances.

In June 2026, the Chilean economy grew by 2.4 %, breaking a five-month streak of decline, according to data released by the Central Bank on Monday, August 3.

In 2025, Chile’s GDP grew by 2.5 %, with inflation closing at 3.5 %, its lowest level in five years.

According to the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (Imacec), which encompasses 90 % of goods and services and is considered a leading estimate of Chile’s GDP, the figure exceeded market expectations. The central bank attributed this to growth in mining, services, and commerce.

With these figures, the country is projected to avoid a technical recession following the negative figures for the first quarter of 2026, although preliminary results for the second quarter of this year will be released next Tuesday, August 18.

The report details that goods production grew 3.9 % year-on-year, thanks to the performance of the mining sector, particularly copper. Commercial activity saw annual growth of 5.4 %, with notable increases in wholesale sales of machinery and equipment, and sales in specialized clothing stores, grocery stores, and through online retail platforms.

In the services sector, the increase was 1.7 % year-on-year, particularly in the areas of health and education.

The Ministry of Popular Power for Science and Technology (Mincyt) and the Oceanographic Institute of Venezuela (IOV), affiliated with the University of the East (UDO), are developing a pilot project in Sucre State, in eastern Venezuela, for the conservation and restoration of coral ecosystems.

According to Sinatra Salazar, a researcher and professor at the Institute of Veterinary Sciences (IOV), the plan was implemented at a pilot farm focused on restoring ecosystems affected specifically by the invasive species Unomia stolonifera.

The farm is located in Mochima National Park, “where small fragments of native corals are collected and placed in artisanal, versatile, and economical structures for cultivation.” Salazar emphasized that these structures have proven effective, achieving a 90 % survival rate.

The professor noted that the first coral harvest from this nursery has already taken place and added that the cultivated fragments will be used to restore affected reefs, recovering their diversity and ecosystem function.

Salazar reported that this joint effort also involves the Foundation Institute for Advanced Studies (IDEA), the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA), the Museum of the Sea-UDO, and the National Parks Institute (Inparques), with scientists working to restore the reefs. They are also promoting the creation of small farms for ecosystem restoration and establishing a coral bank that can be used in any environmental emergency.

With the issuance of General License Y5, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) extended until September 17 the protection of Citgo, a PDVSA subsidiary considered a strategic asset in Venezuelan debt litigation.

In this regard, OFAC extended the restriction on creditors taking action against assets linked to the PDVSA 2020 bond.

The new license states that “except as provided in paragraph (b) of this general license, as of September 17, 2026, all transactions related to, the provision of financing for, and other transactions with the 8.5 percent bond of Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. 2020 that would be prohibited by subsection l(a)(iii) of Executive Order (EO) 13835 of May 21, 2018, as amended by EO 13857 of January 25, 2019, and incorporated into the Venezuela Sanctions Regulations, 31 CFR Part 591 (the VSR) are authorized.”

In this process, the suspension of the final execution of Citgo, ordered by a Delaware court in favor of Amber Energy, a subsidiary of Elliott Investment Management, remains in effect.

With the support of IDB Invest, Panama has begun seeking $1 billion in private investment to bolster key sectors of its development: energy, construction, tourism, water and sanitation, housing, digital infrastructure, employment, manufacturing, agribusiness, and financial services.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) announced that the strategic alliance with IDB Invest, the private sector arm of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group, will help “boost the economy, expand access to financing, strengthen productive sectors with growth potential, and contribute to job creation.”

The ministry explained that the funds would be allocated directly to private companies and projects “or channeled through financial institutions to expand access to credit for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).”

In addition to financing, technical assistance is expected for initiatives in the renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric mobility, and resilient infrastructure sectors.

It is important to note that in the first half of 2026, IDB Invest committed approximately $200 million in new operations in Panama and plans to increase that amount as new eligible projects are identified and approved.
