Facebook will allow conversion of any photo to 3D

The social network expanded this function for any type of image. The tool was only available for photos caption with the app

The Facebook company announced that the function that allowed users of the social network to convert a photo captured with portrait mode into a 3D image is now available for any type of photo.

Through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Facebook said it can convert 2D images into 3D photos even if they have not been captured in portrait mode.

This function was only available for those users who have made their photographs with a high-end device that had several cameras. However, now they can also be used by those who have a single camera on their mobile.

“This alternative makes 3D photography technology accessible for the first time to the millions of people who use phones or tablets with cameras with a lens”, Facebook explained in its Artificial Intelligence blog.

“Users with devices with a dual camera can also benefit, as they can use the front camera to take 3D selfies,” they added.

For this tool to work, the platform created by Mark Zuckerberg prepared a neural network with millions of pairs of public 3D images and their depth maps to estimate the camera distance for each pixel.

For the moment, this feature is available in the Facebook application for users with an iPhone 7 or higher, as well as “recent mid-range or higher” Android devices.
