Facebook could be forced to sell Instagram and WhatsApp
Authorities blame the social network for abusing its large acquisitions in order to neutralize the competition
The United States Competition Commission (FTC) together with prosecutors representing 48 states and territories of the country filed a lawsuit against the popular social network Facebook, alleging the abuse applied by the company on its large acquisitions in order to neutralize the competition.
The acquisitions of the Instagram application in 2012 amounted to 1,000 million dollars, and the messaging service WhatsApp in 2014 of 22,000 million dollars. The demand also includes the conditions imposed by Facebook on software developers.
For Ian Conner, director of the Office of Competition of the FTC, “Facebook’s actions to strengthen and maintain its monopoly deny consumers the benefits of competition.”
The objective of the commission is to level competition and for this they demand that the courts eventually force Facebook to resell Instagram and WhatsApp, “our objective is to reverse Facebook’s anti-competitive behavior and restore competition so that innovation and free competition can to flourish.”
The Agency also requires the group led by Mark Zuckerberg to stop forcing developers to accept certain conditions.
