EU to designate € 20 billion for Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Balkans

The funds will be used to give an immediate response to combat the effects of the pandemic

The European Union will deliver more than 20,000 million euros to countries in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Balkans, in order to combat the effects generated by the coronavirus, as announced by the EU’s top diplomat.

Although there is a commitment by the G-20 to inject large sums into the world economy, charities such as Oxfam and Caritas ensure that the world’s poorest countries also need emergency aid.

After having held a videoconference with the bloc’s foreign and development ministers, the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, announced that “the global pandemic can only be solved globally, it will not be defeated anywhere until there is been defeated everywhere.”

For her part, Caritas Europe General Secretary Maria Nyman announced that “tThis is a first step in the right direction, but it must be complemented by firm and concrete measures.”

The European Commission, through a separate statement, indicated that the funds will aim to provide an immediate response to the emergency, provide contributions to medical research, as well as to the health care team and long-term budget support.
