EU extends economic sanctions to Russia

The extension for six more months is due to the role of Russia in the separatist crisis in eastern Ukraine and for not having applied the Minsk peace agreements

Sanctions applied by the European Union to Russia will be extended for an additional six months. The decision of the Council was made based on the role of the country in the separatist crisis in eastern Ukraine and for not having applied the Minsk peace agreements.

The details were made known through the social network Twitter by the spokesman of the Council president Preben Aamann, during the summit held in Brussels.

As will be recalled, the sanctions that were applied to Russia were supposed to expire on July 31st. The members of the Council of the EU have this date as the deadline “to formalize the political agreement adopted by the leaders today and publish the necessary legal acts for the renewal of the restrictive measures.”

The restrictions are concentrated in finance, energy and defense sectors. Russia is also limited in terms of signing trade agreements, negotiations with banks and companies.

The nation also has a ban on the export and import of weapons, export of dual-use goods, either for military use or for military end-users in Russia. The restrictions extend to access to certain technologies and sensitive services that can be used for oil exploration and production.

The members of the EU Council will follow up on the situation in eastern Ukraine in relation to the signing of the pending peace agreements. They have asked Russia for greater collaboration in other legal investigations.
