Some elements to consider for a good work environment are clear and permanent communication between employer and employee, a good compensation or incentive program, recognition of performance and effort, healthy interpersonal relationships, good balance between work and free time.

A space where respect, consideration and empathy exist favors the permanence of staff, avoiding mass resignations, since by feeling valued and satisfied, workers tend to show greater identification with the organization.

The company must implement internal assertive communication mechanisms, in addition to having solid security protocols. Likewise, organize activities that promote interest in corporate matters and appreciate the proposals of all work teams or departments.

With this decision, the judicial body shows a shift towards a progressive change with respect to cryptocurrencies in the United Arab Emirates, where until 2023 they were considered to lack a precise valuation.

This was stated by Irina Heaver, partner at the United Arab Emirates law firm NeosLegal, who referred to “the ruling in case number 1739 of 2024” in comparison to the situation a year ago.

According to Heaver, in the case an employee had filed a lawsuit “alleging that the employer had not paid his wages, wrongful dismissal compensation and other benefits. The worker’s employment contract stipulated a monthly salary in fiat and 5,250 in EcoWatt tokens. “The litigation has its origins in the employer’s inability to pay the token portion of the employee’s salary within six months.”

In reference to the litigation, it is important to note that last year the court recognized the inclusion of EcoWatts tokens in the contract. However, it was indicated that the payment was not made in cryptocurrencies since the worker “did not provide a clear method to value the currency in fiduciary terms.”

Inclusive salary approach on the path to the digital economy

Heaver clarified that in 2024, the court ordered the payment of the crypto salary according to the employment contract without converting it into fiat. “This decision reflects broader acceptance of cryptocurrencies in employment contracts and highlights the court’s recognition of the evolving nature of financial transactions within the Web3 economy.”

The lawyer also stressed that the court’s reliance on the UAE Civil Transactions Law and Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 in the two rulings is an example of the consistent application of legal principles in determining salaries.

With this precedent, it is possible to foresee an increase in the adoption of digital assets in everyday financial transactions in the UAE, with a more inclusive and innovative salary approach, strengthening the legitimate right of employees to pay their income in fiat or cryptocurrencies, according to the current legal framework.

Cryptocurrencies have gained ground in Latin America, becoming an alternative for paying salaries to employees in key positions or those who work remotely and even from another country, thus ending geographical limitations.

“Payments in cryptocurrencies have been the great gateway for people to work for other countries, taking advantage of how cryptocurrencies have broken geographical barriers and reduced the times for payments between different regions,” said the director of Brand for Europe and Latin America on the global exchange BingX, the Argentine Pablo Monti to Bloomberg Linea.

The sending of digital remittances is also increasing in the region. According to estimates by the multinational Mastercard, these operations could surpass “the sending of physical money across borders,” which would generate an increase of US$20 billion by 2026.

The BingX platform points out that Argentina, Brazil and Mexico are the countries that have the highest volume of employees in cryptocurrencies or that want their salaries to be paid in this modality.

Without a doubt, remote work, which was consolidated during the quarantine due to the Covid-19 pandemic, welcomed the payment of salaries in crypto as the best solution, without leaving aside the challenges that remain in the fiscal aspect and interoperability between the different financial services of the countries, in addition to the labor regulations in force in each nation.

Blockchain technology takes center stage in this growing trend of corporate payments in cryptocurrencies, providing efficiency, security and transparency to cross-border operations.

In terms of figures, “according to the Deel Lab for Global Employment Global Hiring report, published in 2023, payment to remote workers in Latin America through cryptocurrencies increased on the platform from 61 % to 64 % between January and December 2022.”

Latin America remains the region with the highest number of workers who choose to receive payments with cryptocurrencies. They are followed by Europe, the Middle East and Africa/EMEA (27 %); Asia-Pacific/APAC (8 %) and US and Canada/NAM (2 %). The preferred digital currencies for these payments are Bitcoin (64 %), USDC (26 %), Ethereum (7 %), Solana (2 %) and Dash (1 %).

Between 2017 and 2021, Venezuela experienced hyperinflation with monthly increases of up to three digits, the highest of 196.6 % in January 2019, which rapidly reduced the purchasing power of workers and the value of the bolivar, the currency national, which led the country to unofficially adopt the US dollar as a way to protect itself against this crisis.

Currently, even the price of gasoline is set in dollars, at 50 cents per liter.

The government expects Venezuela to close 2024 with the lowest inflation in the last decade, as reported last March by President Nicolás Maduro, who assured he had a plan to continue slowing the pace of price growth.

Meanwhile, university professors and workers from various sectors demand that the authorities increase the minimum wage, the reference for other salaries in the public sector, which is equivalent to about $3.5 per month.

The agreement was reached just hours after GM workers went on strike.

Unifor President Lana Payne said in a statement that GM agreed to the union’s demands related to the strike at the Oshawa Assembly Plant, the St. Catherines Powertrain Plant and the Ford Parts Distribution Center. Woodstock.

“Faced with the disruption of these key facilities, General Motors had no choice but to take our demands seriously and accept them,” Payne explained.

The provisional agreement, which must be ratified by GM workers in Canada, parallels the one reached by Unifor with Ford in late September. Among the key provisions of the agreement, GM commits to raising wages by 20 % to 25 % (depending on occupation), offering a subsidy to workers starting in December 2024 to offset rising cost of living, and reducing the period necessary to advance in salary categories of eight to four years.

GM has announced that the workers who participated in the strike will return to their jobs in the next few hours.

Before this deal, GM was facing two simultaneous labor protests, one in Canada and another in the United States. In the US, the United Auto Workers (UAW) union has held strikes at two GM assembly plants and 18 parts distribution centers since September 15.

The Canadian union Unifor had started strikes at all three GM plants in Canada at one point, but this agreement has ended the strike.

Houngbo also emphasizes, today more than ever, the need to review the laws in the labor sector, so that they are updated and go with the new times; “with a view to protecting workers and promoting sustainable companies”.

Social dialogue is essential between organizations and institutions in the sector to achieve positive results for the workforce.

For the Director General of the ILO, the focus must be on people, on their well-being. Hence, they need to achieve policies based on wage equity and equality of workers. Both pending tasks for agencies and governments.

The executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal), José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, has urged addressing the problem of labor informality in Latin America in order to improve the region’s productivity figures, which are “very low” compared to other geographical areas.

In a podcast of the International Labor Organization (ILO), Salazar has argued that there are no “magic solutions” to increase productivity, and it is necessary to focus on “structural” measures that entail a change in labor relations in Latin America.

Among the main obstacles to closing the gaps with developed countries, the Costa Rican has pointed out that there is a “serious problem” of human capital, caused by low levels of investment in training and education.

“You cannot participate in the productive paradigms of the 21st century without a modern workforce and without the skills demanded by today’s world, in which there is a clear commitment to digital transformation and technological advances,” he warned.

Latin America requires a new approach to the labor sector

Regarding the current situation in Latin America, Salazar has insisted that the business ecosystem, in which small and medium-sized companies mainly coexist, is marked by low productivity, although more and more companies are found to be “islands” of excellence, success and competitiveness. “However, they still represent a low representation within the economy of the countries of the region as a whole,” he lamented.

Thus, the ECLAC secretary has focused on the opportunities that the irruption of technology is generating in the region and has appealed to “bet” on new market niches in the services sector such as electromobility, the circular economy or the transition energetic.

“We must approach the issue of opportunities for productive development and rethink the industrialization of the service sector, as well as improve productivity in the public sector, which is inefficient,” he concluded.
