This reality is even more evident today, with the increase in teleworking and the increase in the number of connected devices in every corner of the house. WiFi repeaters are a good solution for expanding a wireless network, but to get the best results, a number of factors must be taken into account.

For this reason, Devolo experts have shared a document in which they offer keys and tips to optimally place a WiFi repeater and improve the performance of the Internet connection in any space, considering aspects such as the distance at which they should be placed these devices, their position or existing alternatives for long distances.

From Devolo they explain how these WiFi repeaters work, which receive the signal emitted by the ‘router’ to amplify it and broadcast it again. For this reason, repeaters are also often called ‘amplifiers’.

A critical factor for the speed and wireless stability of this ‘WiFi extension’ is the quality of the connection between the ‘router’ and the repeater. This means that the best possible positioning is really important to optimally extend the connection.

Correct distance and WiFi interference factors

When choosing a position for the repeater, the user should take into account that the closest location is not automatically the best. For example, in a house where the office is far from the ‘router’, placing the repeater in that room can only mean that “if it finally receives a weak signal, what it forwards is also a weak signal.”

In this example, the weak connection between the ‘router’ and the repeater would reduce the online connection. The repeater would hardly have any effect. For this reason, what the experts recommend is to place the repeater “more or less halfway between the router and the devices that are going to use WiFi”. “This means that the repeater will be able to receive a sufficiently strong signal, capable of extending,” they detail.

Also, if possible, the repeater should be located in the center of the room or corridor, and not hidden, for example, in a corner of the room. Walls and furniture decrease the transmission capacity and therefore weaken the WiFi signal. Also, microwaves or wireless computer accessories can interfere with WiFi due to radio waves. “Even water slows down the signals, and it doesn’t have to be water from a large home aquarium. Water pipes, underfloor heating, and even flower vases and clotheslines with wet clothes impede the rooms below.” have good WiFi reception,” the document adds.

The best position and alternatives for long distances

When looking for the ideal location for the repeater, it is advisable to evaluate the quality of the connection by performing speed test measurements. There are more modern repeaters, such as those from the German manufacturer Devolo, which even incorporate an LED indicator on the front that indicates the quality of the received signal.

Users who want to go a step further can search the Internet for ‘software’ solutions that generate WiFi heat maps. These are installed, for example, in a laptop to check the signal quality in various areas of the house and, in this way, detect the areas where the connection is lowest.

When properly placed, repeaters improve long-term home WiFi range and ensure much more stable and faster coverage. But even these can reach their limits, especially if you want to cover a distance of several stories high.

In these cases, it is recommended to use other technologies, with available adapters. This also works conveniently in power outlets. The difference with a repeater is that these adapters use the power line as a data cable to communicate with each other. In this way, the network signal can go from one floor to another without being slowed down by ceilings or water pipes.

Airlines will be able to provide the latest 5G network technology on their planes, according to a latest update by the European Commission on on-board communications, which advances the designation of certain 5G frequencies for user communications.

Currently, all airlines encourage passengers to activate “airplane mode” during takeoff and landing of the plane, by means of a light signal that indicates when they must do so.

This is a security measure implemented by companies to avoid interference with any other electrical or telecommunications system on the plane, which, if it exists, could cause a plane crash.

On the rest of the flight, it is possible to use a paid Wi-Fi network on some airlines (including Iberia or Air Europa) when the plane has already exceeded a certain height, and is off both the takeoff and landing runways.

As indicated by the Commission, since 2008 it reserves certain frequencies for mobile communications on aircraft, a decision on on-board communications that has recently been updated with the widespread deployment of 5G services.

Now the EU announced that all passengers on board flights in the region will be able to both keep their electronic devices turned on and their mobile data activated, in order to use 5G networks.

In this way, passengers will be able to access connectivity “to the maximum of its capacity and characteristics, as with a 5G mobile network on land.”

It should be noted that the European Commission also introduced novelties for road transport, where Wi-Fi with 5 GHz frequency bands can be implemented in cars, buses and other means of transport. This will become effective on June 30, 2023 “at the latest”, according to the institution.

In 2009, 802.11n (WiFi 4) arrived, multiplying the maximum transmission rate by nine, which went from 54 Mbps to 450 Mbps. In 2013, WiFi 5 reached a maximum speed greater than 1 Gbps.

Currently, the latest standard (802.11ax or WiFi 6) is being massively implemented, which represents a great advance in terms of speed (up to 4.8 Gbps per access point) and capacity (up to 400 % increase).

This system was launched in 2019 but it is increasingly widespread in devices and networks, and uses OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) technology that reduces latency, as well as Color BBS to avoid interference.

It also has a variant, WiFi 6E, which takes advantage of the spectrum using the 6 GHz band of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is added to the 2.4 and 5 GHz already existing in WiFi 6. In addition to connecting to the Internet with computers and mobile devices, WiFi networks can be used to connect Internet of Things devices.

According to experts, WiFi detection is presented as an alternative for remote detection of movement at home from a distance, based on the same mechanisms used in wireless networks to detect environmental changes and its main use is in home security, care of older people or gesture recognition.

Despite the fact that the function has been known for some years, thanks to this research, the project undergoes an extensive evaluation for the application of standards such as: 802.11ad, 802.11ay, 802.11n, 802.11ac, 802.11ax and 802.11be.

The research group working on the standard expects the device to hit the market in September 2024.

Samsung has announced the availability of its Smart Monitor range in the Spanish market, two models that offer resolution up to 4K, with 32 inches and different connectivity options for work and study from home.

The M7 model offers a UHD resolution (3,840 x 2,160) with four times more pixels than Full HD resolution. It is available in a 32-inch size. For its part, the M5 model can be found in two sizes: 27 and 32 inches.

This range of monitors has different connectivity options for both computers and smartphones.

It has built-in WiFi to use Microsoft 365 applications without a computer connection, and is compatible with Samsung’s Smart Hub application, as the company reported in a statement.

Smart Monitor is already available in two models: M7 with ultra high definition (UHD) resolution in 32 inches at a price of 399 euros, while M5 has two models of 32 and 27 inches, at a price of 289 euros and 249 euros, respectively.
