The WHO issued the alert “due to the spread of the Bundibugyo variant, a strain of the virus that is currently being monitored by global health authorities.”

The Ministry of Health details “basic biosecurity measures, such as frequent handwashing and the recommendation to avoid direct contact with people exhibiting health conditions. Likewise, the ministry urged travelers to immediately go to authorized medical centers if they experience symptoms associated with fever or general malaise.”

“The African Union, through its Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, maintains the continental alert” as a measure to protect the population.

The disease has affected more than 150,000 people since 2022, with at least 377 deaths. The announcement of the MPOX international emergency lifting was made on Friday, September 5, by the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, highlighting the decline in cases “in particularly affected countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Sierra Leone, and Uganda.”

However, he emphasized that “the lifting of the emergency does not mean that the threat is over or that our response will stop.”

Monkeypox “was the second international emergency due to this viral disease that the WHO had declared, following the one it declared between 2022 and 2023. In that case, numerous cases also occurred in European and American countries, while this time the outbreaks were primarily limited to African nations.”

The WHO president insisted that this is not the time to reduce investment, collaboration, and solidarity, particularly in health care in the most affected countries on the African continent.

The international organization announced the cooperation with TikTok, pointing out the importance of providing accurate data to the population in an increasingly digital world.

With this step, the WHO demonstrates its commitment to “take advantage of the various digital communication platforms to reach a greater number of people around the world, in order to promote basic health knowledge and healthy behaviors and actions in an increasingly digitalized world,” as published on its website.

In addition, it has stressed that social networks “can be important sources of information that influence decisions and behaviors related to health. One in four young adults actively seek out informative content on social media, including TikTok.”

The WHO-TikTok partnership seeks to minimize misinformation by “promoting evidence-based content and encouraging positive health dialogues.”

This cooperation is expected to serve as a turning point in the way digital platforms strengthen their social responsibility.

Dr. Jeremy Farrar, WHO’s chief scientist, said: “By collaborating with TikTok and other social media, we are contributing to access to credible information and participation in scientific discourse that collectively helps shape a healthier future for all people.”

With this new project, the WHO and others involved will seek to establish a global mRNA vaccine production network to respond more quickly and effectively to future pandemics, considering that avian flu could be a serious public health threat if it became a pandemic.

Thanks to this project, the capacity of low-income countries to develop and produce their own vaccines will be strengthened, reducing dependence on other countries and strengthening research and production areas in the pharmaceutical area.

“We are now entering the fourth year of the pandemic with a world that is in a much better situation than it was a few years ago, thanks to clinical care and the management of vaccines and treatments”, the expert assessed.

On the other hand, he assured that “for most of 2022, Covid-19 was in decline, vaccination increased and sustained progress was made in access to vaccines by low-and middle-income countries that had been forgotten in 2021 due to to vaccine nationalism.”

Tedros recalled that last week the WHO approved for the first time two generic drugs against the virus (nirmatrelvir and ritonavir), produced by an Indian pharmaceutical company, which will increase access to less developed countries to treatments.

The initiative is supported by FIFA, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, WISH, the NGO Friendship Benches and the WHO Universal Health Coverage Association. The benches initiative was symbolically launched with the Bench of England previewing the Qatar Foundation’s global health event, the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) in the run-up to a larger reveal of the benchs in World Mental Health Day.

English athlete Sir Mo Farah, with ten Olympic and world gold medals, opened the England bench. “The bench is a simple yet powerful vehicle for promoting mental health, from park benches where people gather to football stadiums where players and staff watch their teams play for the joy and promise of sport and success. The Friendship Benches project is a powerful reminder of the importance of how health, from mental to physical health, is precious and common to all people and nations; how, through sport people can reach out to others, as human beings, in the spirit of solidarity and support,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The final locations of each of the 32 banks will be announced soon. Once installed, information will be shared on how Qatari residents and visitors will be able to visit their national benches, and others, in a show of support for promoting mental health.

Morales said: “We are discussing with the Ministry of Health where the priorities are to be able to intervene in the areas of comprehensive community health; as well as raising management capacities, delivering medicines and supplies, recovering the infrastructure.”

The projects will be offering support in various areas such as: medicines, strengthening the capacities of health centers, such as the Comprehensive Diagnostic Centers (CDI), among others.

Reactivate the pharmaceutical industry

The representative of the WHO and PAHO highlighted the importance of reactivating the country’s pharmaceutical industry to be able to produce the medicines that the population requires and that allow them to improve their health conditions. In his opinion, the country has a fairly strong pharmaceutical industry compared to other countries.

“Not only raise production, not only raise the laboratories where the medicines and vaccines that Venezuela can develop are produced; but also to raise the capacities of the Ministry of Health, of the Institute of Hygiene to be able to ensure that this production is of quality”, he explained.

On the other hand, Morales also referred to the need to optimize the living conditions of workers, who, in his opinion, are working in “very complex conditions” that have worsened as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Morales also confirmed that the WHO, like PAHO, has always supported the country in the “definition, implementation, and supervision of public health policies.”
