A new vulnerability in WhatsApp messages has been identified. The cybersecurity company Kaspersky reports that users can be attacked through a document received via message, and upon opening it, a virus is installed that takes control of the computer.

WhatsApp is once again a target for hackers through user chats. The warning is to be vigilant with messages from contacts to avoid further damage.

According to the cybersecurity company, this is a global attack. “The list of affected countries includes Spain, Mexico, Brazil, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Australia, Russia, Vietnam, and Malaysia.”

The situation is not easy considering that the attackers infiltrate the platform, and the message appears to be from a friend or coworker. “At a technical level, it’s based on a file in a format called VBScript, which is very well hidden so that the computer’s antivirus software doesn’t trigger it. To deceive the victim, the attackers change the document’s name according to the language of the country they want to target.”

One of the clues analyzed by Kaspersky is user complaints on social media about stolen accounts, where cybercriminals begin to indiscriminately release the infected file to see how many people they can actually fall for it.

The situation worsens once the complete package is downloaded with a program called ManageEngine Endpoint Central, “which allows a company’s IT staff to remotely control computers and connects them directly to the hackers’ servers.” If the user has the WhatsApp Desktop application on Windows, there’s not much they can do, “since the hidden code can be opened directly with a double-click due to the operating system’s built-in tools.”

Scams via messaging or cell phone calls have increased in recent months. Meta’s strategy focuses on the security of its platform users, preventing their sensitive data from being compromised or stolen.

WhatsApp will send a notification to users “if it detects potential fraudulent messages with a new optional tool, which the company is currently working on.” According to the specialized portal WABetaInfo, the test is being conducted in the beta version of the Android application (v2.26.22.2).

It’s a proprietary technology tool that analyzes incoming messages from unknown contacts directly on the user’s device. If it detects what could be a scam, it “allows the user to choose what they want to do: block and report the sender or continue the conversation.”

An important detail is that, because it operates on the user’s own device, the message analysis “does not send any information to other servers, not even those of Meta – WhatsApp’s parent company –” thus ensuring privacy with end-to-end encryption.

The tool will be optional and will be disabled by default. It runs in the background, without interrupting user activity, and includes a history showing when and how the alert was triggered.

WhatsApp is testing the new Guest Chats feature with a select group of users on iOS and Android, making it clear that guests don’t need to install the app or register a phone number.

Guest Chats represent a new alternative while also raising security and identity management challenges. Test users only need to go to the “Invite a friend” section or through their contact list. Once there, “the user generates a personalized link that they can send via SMS, email, or any other messaging app. The recipient simply has to open the link in their browser, where they can choose between downloading WhatsApp or continuing as a guest without an account.”

If you select the guest option, WhatsApp Web generates a unique identifier for the user, which serves as the basis for end-to-end encryption of the conversation. The guest enters a name (which can be real or a pseudonym) and accepts the Terms of Service. At that point, they can see the phone number of the person who sent the invitation, which is an important privacy consideration.

The guest link only lasts 10 days; it expires if not used, cannot be reused, and a new link must be created. Furthermore, guests can only send text messages; they cannot send or receive photos, videos, documents, GIFs, stickers, voice messages, or participate in calls or groups.

It is important to note that all conversations remain end-to-end encrypted and can be verified using a QR code or by manually checking security codes, just like in any WhatsApp chat.
