Google announced that it will apply new quality measures to websites whose content is exclusively generated using artificial intelligence.

Google’s quality raters team will penalize pages where “all or most of the main content is generated using AI” due to a shift in the company’s perception of content that could hide a deceptive purpose, such as profiting the author.

In this sense, pages with AI-generated content will be given the lowest rating, according to John Mueller, senior research analyst and leader of the research department, during his participation in the Search Central Live Madrid 2025 event.

Regarding generative AI, Google has indicated that its proper use does not contradict its principles. However, it has clarified that this does not mean it can be used “to generate content primarily intended to manipulate search rankings.”

In its Search Quality Rater Guidelines published in January of this year, the company stated: “Generative AI can be a useful tool for content creation, but like any tool, it can also be misused.”

Regarding the penalty for pages with content generated exclusively with AI, the technology company has indicated that it extends to the activity of “copying, paraphrasing, embedding, or republishing content” of this type, as it does not provide added value for website visitors.

The computer scientist and father of the World Wide Web (WWW), Tim Berners-Lee, stated that he does not trust Web3 for the decentralization of the web and insisted on his personal project Solid as a solution so that information is no longer in hands of certain technological platforms.

Berners-Lee recently pointed out at the Web Summit conference in Lisbon (Portugal) that technology companies “control the world and manipulate people by providing them with information”, in statements to EuroNews Next, in which he acknowledged that currently “there are many things that are wrong on the web”.

The scientist has spent years trying to create a free and decentralized web where information is open and does not depend on large technology companies. Precisely, Web3 advocates this characteristic of open infrastructure, with open source software, so that all users can participate in its development.

It should be remembered in this sense that within Web3 the application of the blockchain for the democratization of the web, the metaverse and the use of non-fungible tokens, better known as NFT, coexist.

However, the creator of the WWW believes that the blockchain is not the solution to this problem and that one must “understand what the terms” that are being discussed really mean, beyond the buzzwords.

“It is a real shame that the Ethereum people have taken the name of Web3 for the things they are doing with the blockchain. In fact, Web3 is not the web at all,” criticized the expert.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into a possible duopoly of mobile browsers operated by Apple and Google.

This analysis is based on a publication made in June and in which a Mobile Ecosystem Market Study is carried out, whose conclusions indicate that both have an absolute domain of mobile ecosystems.

“They have an effective duopoly that allows them to exercise absolute dominance over operating systems, app stores, and web browsers on mobile devices,” this document reads.

To justify this claim, the agency also mentions that, in 2021, 97 % of mobile web browsing in the UK was done through the technology and engines used by Apple and Google.

That, taking into account that there are currently more than 800,000 users of cloud gaming services, would indicate that both manufacturers are “harming businesses, slowing down innovation and adding unnecessary costs”.

On the other hand, the CMA comments that “potentially disruptive innovations are being held back by the restrictions imposed by Apple” and stresses that the devices it manufactures, as well as its application store and that of Google, the search advertising services of this another and the prices applied “are above a competitive rate”.

Google removed more than 6 billion URLs leading to pirated content from its search results following requests from individuals or entities that did own the copyright.

In its latest report, the technology company ensures that it has removed 6,012,481,649 URLs hosted on 4,045,445 unique domains from the search results, as detailed by the company in its report.

These figures are based on requests from 327,510 copyright owners, who may be individuals or entities, and 333,880 reporting organizations, who acted on behalf of copyright owners.

The company clarifies that not all requests conclude in the removal of the URL from the Search Engine results. Thus, a negative review of a business, criticism of a politician for his performance as a member of the Government or the inclusion of a certain film in a list such as “The worst of XX year” are examples of requests that do not meet the requirements.

Examples shared also include requests that impersonate a person or organization that owns the copyright, for which Google does not remove the URL “due to fraudulent copyright claims.”

Google announced a new extension on the phased removal of third-party cookies from its Chrome browser, a process that will take longer than planned and that it hopes to start in the second half of 2024.

Third-party cookies are those that do not originate from the websites of the owners, but are generated by services or providers external to these pages. Initially, the company indicated that it planned to conclude this process in the following two years, in June of last year it recognized that it needed more time to finish them.

He then indicated that, although he had estimated to eliminate them completely by 2022, he postponed the deadline until the end of 2023 and that he “intends” to start withdrawing them in mid-2024.

Now, Google said it proposed a new extension from Google Privacy Sandbox, the initiative that works on technologies that protect the privacy of users and that is in charge of this task.

“We intend to begin phasing out third-party ‘cookies’ in Chrome in the second half of 2024,” the company’s vice president, Anthony Chavez, said in a statement posted on his blog.

Defamatory comments published on the Internet can be very harmful, both for the person indicated, as well as for their family group. The damages are diverse and affect from the children in their schools who are exposed to the rejection or ridicule of their peers for a fact that involves their parents, the business area, the companies or organizations that may be harmed in their contracts because others do not want to connect with them.

There may also be mental, psychological and psychiatric damages that can decompensate the victim. This is stated by the lawyer Jesús Ramón Rodríguez, who adds that we are all on the street and just as we can catch the flu, we can also be the object of offenses.

“Whether it is a normal person who is exalted or by a person who has a madness or lack of control, also through networks that slightly make some statements that affect the individual or that a web can place indications regarding another one without having contacted it, just because of a revenge or to cause any affection… in such a way that the aggrieved person feels bad,  and is affected.”

Rodríguez knows the subject very well. He is a specialist in Criminal Law and Computer Law. He stresses that the good name, reputation, honor and private life of people as well as their integrity are protected by the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in its article 60.

He takes profit to refer to article 442 of the Penal Code which regulates the issue of defamation and article 444, of the same code, which refers to insults.

It states that both terms have penalties that are mild in scope. “Defamation has a penalty of jail for one to three years and a fine of 100 to 1,000 tax units, that at the judge’s discretion, depending on the seriousness of the fact and if it concurs in other conducts that may be that it has been carried out in a manner continued, that aggravates the penalty,” he highlights.

In the case of insults, the Penal Code indicates that the person will be punished with imprisonment from six months to one year and a fine of fifty tax units (50 U.T.).

Actions to take

J.D. Jesús Ramón Rodríguez points out that there are actions that the defamed person can carry out, including addressing the aggressor and claiming the situation in order to withdraw the publication that has been made. Another way is to go directly to file what is called a complaint or a private accusation before a Court of Trial, not that of control. Accordong to him, it has to be triggered and monitored by the offended person himself or by his legal representative and that the Public Ministry does not intervene in this type of case.

“It is a situation of debate that will arise between the person who feels offended and the one who is being prosecuted, who is being accused of that conduct, of defamation and injury.”

He explains that – as they are crimes of private action – they have a particular, special procedure, also established in the Organic Code of Criminal Procedure. “It should be noted that the way to intervene the Prosecutor’s Office would be a first step, when this is about the location of data of that aggressor, of that offending person who is carrying out such activity and the offended person does not have the instruments to ensure that said person can be identified. Then the Public Ministry carries out what is called judicial assistance and delivers the information requested by the offended person and consigns it to the Court of trial so that the procedure with the complaint that it initiates can be carried out.”

Rodríguez recommends communicating with a trusted lawyer to be able to analyze the case and the behaviors if they really reach illicit that can be prosecuted and see the possibility that it may be reportable; “there are cases in which conviction responses have been received for these aggressive acts of the defamatory or insulting by electronic means and it is perfectly feasible.”

Finally, Rodríguez took advantage to put himself at the command of whoever wants to talk and have information about facts of which he feels offended, and thus analyze together “the situation that actually occurred and evaluate, consider whether we have the possibility of taking it to trial.”
