Tesla has surpassed Audi in global sales for the first time in its history, and seems to point its engines towards the German Volkswagen group.

The market was positive for Tesla due to the 12 % reduction in Audi sales (1.67 million cars). In contrast, Tesla managed to place 1.79 million vehicles worldwide.

In the 2024 results report, Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi, indicated that the company was affected by factors such as “global economic uncertainties.” He stressed that the intensification of competition was a constant last year.

Despite sales of the Audi Q5 (298,000 units), Audi A6 (244,000 units) and Audi Q3 (215,000 units) models, and “the renewal of the range in more than 20 models with a triple range of vehicles – electric, plug-in hybrids and combustion vehicles – it has not managed to surpass the sales of Elon Musk’s Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y”.

The Volkswagen group has started production of its ID.4 electric compact SUV in Chattanooga in the state of Tennessee, becoming the company’s first electric vehicle assembled in the United States, the company said in a statement.

The German company intends to increase the assembly of the ID.4 at the plant to 7,000 vehicles per month during this year, with the aim of continuing to increase production until 2023. The first vehicles will arrive from October 2022.

The ID.4 is the Volkswagen group’s most popular electric model, with 190,000 units delivered to customers worldwide since its launch last year.

The start of production is the result of an investment of 800 million dollars (788.6 million euros at current exchange rates) in electrifying the Chattanooga factory, which includes facilities dedicated to the assembly of vehicles and batteries. The Tennessee plant is now the sixth global center producing vehicles for Volkswagen’s electric range.

This factory employs more than 4,000 people and is actively recruiting more than 1,000 new production team members through 2022, to help meet customer demand for the ID.4 and Atlas family.}

Millionaire investment in the electric transition

Also, to prepare for the transition to electric, the factory has organized more than 75,000 hours of staff training on battery-powered vehicles and high-voltage systems.

Volkswagen has committed to investing $ 7.1 billion (€6,999.2 million) over the next five years in the North American region to boost its product portfolio, regional R&D and manufacturing capabilities. The firm aims for 55 % of US sales to be all-electric by 2030.

The Volkswagen Group selected Sagunt, a Spanish town in Valencia, to install its battery gigafactory, which will also serve as support for the construction of urban electric models in the Catalan town of Martorell and in the Navarran town of Landaben from 2025 and 2026.

The execution of this gigafactory will create 3,500 direct jobs by the end of the decade and will have a capacity of 40 GWh per year. Additionally, the factory will also be able to supply the Ford factory in Almussafes, due to an agreement of “European cooperation between both firms by which they undertook to develop zero-emission and light commercial models.”

The factory will become the third in Europe for the Volkswagen Group and the official announcement will be made shortly before “the company registers, together with Seat, its comprehensive electrification proposal in the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation in the Electric Vehicle sector and Connected.“

Sagunt: an industrial estate

This gigafactory will be located in the industrial estate adjacent to the port of Sagunt called Parc Sagunt II and will have some 5.6 million square meters of land.

The space is considered industrial land, due to the “strategic environmental and territorial declaration (DATE) of the special plan for the second phase of this manufacturing area and confirmed by the Department of Ecological Transition of the Generalitat Valenciana” through a published statement last February 17.

The Generalitat stated that as a result of this environmental authorization, the region is considered a “magnificent” position to host large-scale industrial investments.

The German group, based in Wolfsburg, will take advantage of Microsoft services in cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

“This is the next step in our strategic partnership,” said Scott Guthrie, director of Microsoft. So far the financial conditions and duration of this new contract have not been disclosed. Volkswagen and Microsoft have been cooperating since 2018 to create a dematerialized platform for data exchange between connected vehicles.
