This achievement stems from the research work of the Brazilian Butantan Institute, the largest public vaccine manufacturer in Latin America, in conjunction with the Franco-Austrian pharmaceutical company Valneva.

The Butantan Institute issued a statement announcing that “the vaccine was approved by Anvisa after being evaluated in the United States” in 4,000 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 65.

The vaccine showed a good safety profile and high immunogenicity: “98.9 % of the clinical trial participants produced neutralizing antibodies, with levels that remained robust for at least six months.”

As is known, chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Last year, in Brazil, “267,000 probable cases of the disease and at least 213 deaths were recorded,” according to data from the Ministry of Health. With the vaccine’s approval, it will be available for use in the country by the population over 18 years of age.

It is important to note that this chikungunya vaccine, the first in the world, “has already received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the United States regulatory agency, and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) of the European Union.”

In Brazil, its implementation now depends on its incorporation into the public health system by the National Commission for the Incorporation of Technologies into the Unified Health System (Conitec), of the Ministry of Health, which could establish a vaccination plan, prioritizing residents of endemic regions, according to Esper Kallás, director of the Butantan Institute.

The epidemiological alert for the Americas is aimed at preventing cases of dengue in the most vulnerable areas and avoiding severe forms of the disease.

PAHO noted that the DENV-3 serotype was “identified in several countries in the Americas, including Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru. In 2024, Argentina reported its circulation, marking the introduction of this serotype in the country. That same year, Brazil and Colombia reported an increase in cases associated with DENV-3, especially among children, and it has been detected in other nations in Central America and the Caribbean.”

With the reappearance of this serotype, the risk for the most vulnerable populations increases. In this sense, the organization recommends that countries in the region reinforce vector control measures, in addition to strengthening diagnostic capacity in health systems and providing patients with early and adequate care to prevent serious complications. Information and awareness campaigns to reduce exposure to mosquitoes that transmit the virus and eliminate breeding sites are also crucial. This is accompanied by monitoring by health authorities and timely vaccination.

Between January and December, the firm invoiced 18,471 million (16,625 million euros), compared to the 803 million (723 million euros) that it entered in 2020. This change is due to the fact that the vaccines began to be marketed robustly in 2021.

Income from vaccines was 17,675 million (15,909 million euros), compared to 200 million (180 million euros) the previous year, while income from subsidies grew by 38.9 %, to 735 million dollars (€662 million).

“We are currently intensively monitoring the new strains, such as omicron, which is causing so much concern in recent days. It generates variations in the spicule protein sequence. We are testing the effectiveness of our vaccine against this new variant and we are exploring the development of a specific vaccine if necessary”, he advanced during his speech before the Commission of investigation related to the management of vaccines and the Vaccination Plan of the Congress of Deputies.

In this regard, the Janssen leader added that they are “working together with the World Health Organization, the academic world and different institutions” to clarify what the impact of omicron could be on already approved vaccines.

Vaccines for the world

In any case, Díaz-Rubio Amate has defended that Janssen “continues to believe in the benefit” of its vaccine, which is provided non-profit for the duration of the pandemic, “to millions of people around the world. We are committed to remaining non-profit for the duration of the pandemic and initially at a single price worldwide,” he stressed.

The leader of Janssen has recognized that it is “complex” to maket the transfer of vaccine technology so that it can be carried out by other centers around the world. “It is complex due to the needs of equipment, raw materials … Technology transfer is a complex project that requires qualified personnel with great experience,” he explained.

Despite this, he has argued that “having access to vaccines that save lives should not depend on where you live or purchasing power.” “We are especially proud of our work to facilitate equitable access.”

He has valued COVAX as “an essential mechanism so that the most disadvantaged nations are not left behind.” In fact, he recalled that Janssen will supply up to 900 million doses of its vaccine to this instrument and to the African Union over the next year.

“By the end of this year, we estimate that 60 percent of our production will have been made available to less wealthy nations and we will continue next year,” he added.

This measure will be carried out at the land, air and sea borders and a day of incidents is expected.

The new policy will end non-essential travel restrictions that were first enforced in March 2020, although Americans had no restrictions on returning home.

Until now, only foreigners with permanent residence and holders of specific visas (such as students) have been able to enter the country from the affected regions. To get there, many foreigners have had to first go through Mexico or Costa Rica, remain in quarantine for two weeks, and then fly to the United States.

Travelers will need to present proof of complete regimen of one of the six vaccines authorized by the WHO: Moderna, Pfizer, Janssen, AstraZeneca, Sinovac and Sinopharm. Others, like Sputnik, are not allowed.

Travelers must also present a negative PCR or antigen test carried out no later than three days before the trip. Those under 18 do not need to be vaccinated, but a negative test for those over 2 years of age is a must.

At the same time, he highlighted the flexibility in the requirements to take the entrance tests, so that passengers who are fully vaccinated will not need a PDT to travel to England.

Shapps noted that by the end of October “fully vaccinated eligible passengers and those with an approved vaccine from a select group of non-red countries will be able to replace their day 2 test with a cheaper lateral flow test, reducing the cost of the evidence upon arrival in England.”

If the test is positive, it is mandatory to isolate and carry out the confirmatory PCR, which will not have any additional cost for the passenger “which will be genomically sequenced to help identify new variants.”

On the other hand, it was established that people who are not vaccinated and come from non-red countries will have to present “pre-departure tests, day 2 and day 8 PCR tests. The launch test is still an option to reduce the period of self-isolation.”

As of October 4, England will grant a differentiated treatment to travelers from the United Kingdom who return fully vaccinated and come from 17 countries including Japan and Singapore, due to the success of the pilot carried out in the United States and Europe.

Countries such as Spain, France, Italy and Portugal which are on the amber list will be reclassified and will be considered as low risk countries. While Turkey, Egypt, Maldives and Kenya stand out among the “eight countries that will come out of that list as of September 22”.

The dose for this age group will be 10 micrograms, a third of the adult dose, Özlem Türeci, co-founder of Biontech, said in statements published in Bild am Sonntag.

Biontech announced on September 10 that it will apply for approval of its coronavirus vaccine for children between the ages of five and eleven in the coming weeks. According to the report, the results of the study are already available and only need to be prepared for the regulatory authorities.

Vaccination data for even younger children will be available by the end of the year, according to Türeci. “(For that group) we will lower the dose again,” she added.

Risks prevention

For its part, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) stated that it could not yet give a deadline for a possible authorization. The German pharmaceutical company is already preparing production. The director of the German Pediatric Association, Jörg Dötsch, stressed that vaccination in the age group would especially benefit children at risk.

Dötsch added that Germany’s Standing Committee on Immunization (Stiko) could start by recommending vaccination at that age for children at risk, just as it did for children 12 to 17 years old. The risk of unexpected side effects must be weighed against the benefit of vaccination, he stressed.

Regarding booster vaccines, Ugur Sahin, co-founder of Biontech, commented that it depends on the desired strategy. “If you want to keep infections at a low level in general, you need a high level of antibodies to be able to prevent infections. For this purpose, the third vaccination makes sense.” But if you want to prevent serious diseases and the overflow of intensive care units, you can certainly follow a different strategy and wait longer for booster shots.”

Sahin was optimistic about the evolution of the pandemic in Germany. In his opinion, in the next European spring almost the entire population will be immune, either because it is vaccinated or because it was immunized after passing the infection. “The virus will still be there, but the strategies on how society deals with it will no longer be controversial. The virus will no longer be a threat.”

However, according to data provided by the Central Bank recently, during the second quarter of the year the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) showed a slight growth of 1 %.

Seasonal data shows the activation of commercial activity and key sectors in Chile such as mining. One of the main factors that has driven this growth dynamic was the increase in domestic demand between the months of March and June of this year.

According to the reports, domestic demand was 31.7 % year-on-year and 1.6 % compared to the first quarter, “mainly due to household consumption, driven by economic support measures and the withdrawal of pension funds.”

Additionally, mining showed a year-on-year growth of 2.8 % and copper activity showed positive signs supported by the opening of a new processing plant and better laws that regulate the activity.

Regarding the GDP growth projections for this year, in June the Central Bank of Chile indicated that they could be between 8.5 and 9.5 %, an estimate that coincides with that estimated by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), located at 8 %.

In a memorandum released Monday, Austin explained that he has made the decision after a week of consultations with the military’s high command and the Army’s medical services and that he will seek the approval of President Biden for the vaccine to be mandatory “at the latest” by mid-September or immediately after formal clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “whichever comes first.”

“In the meantime, we will comply with the president’s instructions regarding restrictions and requirements for unvaccinated federal personnel. These requirements apply to all uniformed personnel, as well as civilian and contractor personnel,” says the Secretary of Defense.

“I will not hesitate to act before or recommend a different course from the president if I feel the need to do so. To defend this nation, we need a healthy and prepared force,” said Austin, who recommends receiving the vaccine before the order arrives from the president or FDA.

President Biden has been quick to react to the Pentagon’s announcement and has shown his “strong support” for Austin’s decision. “These vaccines will save lives. Be safe. They are effective,” the head of the White House insisted to his compatriots, who still refuse to go through the process of vaccination.

“We are still on the fight, and every eligible American must take immediate steps to get vaccinated. I am proud that our military men and women continue to help lead the charge in the fight against this pandemic, as they do so often, by set an example of keeping your fellow Americans safe,” says Biden.

Vaccines in the United States Army are voluntary when under FDA emergency use authorization. However, the president has the power to remove that rule and make it a requirement for all staff. So far, 65 % of active military service has received the full vaccination schedule, while 74 % have received at least one dose.
