The open-source Godot Engine game engine is currently being used by cybercriminals to spread the GodLoader ransomware, which steals users’ personal data and credentials.

According to cybersecurity researchers, the threat looms over more than 1.2 million online gamers through the free Godot Engine game development platform.

“This engine has an intuitive interface and a Python-like scripting language called GDScript and its user community registers more than 2,700 contributors, making it one of the most popular engines.”

The ransomware campaign has already infected 17,000 victim computers worldwide, taking advantage of the “trust that gamers place in legitimate platforms to carry out their malicious actions.”

Cybercriminals have used the Google Play Store, which generates so much trust among users, to release malware through applications that hide spyware.

Recent information indicates that five Android applications contain this type of software capable of stealing data such as user credentials, in addition to downloading and running malicious applications.

The five applications that experts on the subject recommend uninstalling as soon as possible are: AirFS – File sharing via Wi-Fi (30,305 downloads), Astro Explorer (718 downloads), Amber for Genshin (19 downloads), CryptoPulsing (790 downloads) and Brain Matrix (259 downloads).

Regarding the progress of Mandrake spyware, it has been indicated that it has been rapid. Cybercriminals have “improved their methods of concealment, evasion of isolated environments and circumventing new defense mechanisms.”

Today, threats are more sophisticated and difficult to detect, so customer vulnerability increases exponentially. Furthermore, if they sneak into the official application download channels, the risk is greater.
