Elon Musk is willing to send the humanoid robot Optimus, developed by his autonomous electric car company Tesla, to Mars in 2026.

The goal is to evaluate the system’s capabilities in a test mission aboard a SpaceX Starship rocket, for future missions in 2029 or 2031.

Musk made the announcement on his X social media account, in conjunction with the 23rd anniversary of SpaceX’s founding. He also mentioned that “the timeframe for the first human landing will depend on the success of these tests.”

According to the magnate, the test with the humanoid robot Optimus would be a crucial step “in the development of SpaceX’s interplanetary transportation system, with an eye toward the exploration and possible colonization of Mars.”

As is known, Optimus was unveiled in 2022. It stands 1.73 meters tall and weighs 57 kilos. It was designed to perform basic household and operational tasks. Its equipment includes “a 2.3 kWh battery, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a mobility system based on five articulated fingers, which mimic human anatomy.”
