Starting in January 2026, Mexican workers will receive a 13 % increase in the minimum wage, as indicated by President Claudia Sheinbaum, who added that the measure was supported by unions and employers.

This salary increase is part of the official promise that the basic wage will cover 2.5 basic food baskets by 2030.

With the increase, the national minimum wage will rise from 278.8 pesos per day (US$15.27) to 315.04 pesos (US$17.26). In the northern border region, where a differentiated system is in place, the figure will increase from 419.88 pesos (US$23) to 440.87 pesos (US$24.15).

In this regard, the monthly basic wage will be 9,582.47 pesos (US$524.96) in the rest of the country and 13,409 pesos (US$734.59) in the border region.

Authorities have indicated that the salary increase will benefit 8.5 million workers. They also highlighted that “the average real wage of formal employees registered with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) has grown 27.5% since 2018, reflecting a sustained improvement in labor income.”

The Government of Chile, through the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare and the Ministry of Finance, has reached an agreement with the Workers Central Union (CUT in Spanish) of Chile, the largest trade union organization in the country, to raise the minimum wage to 440,000 Chilean pesos (about 503 euros) next May.

In turn, as reported by the Government on Monday, a new increase of 20,000 pesos (22.87 euros) will be applied in September, which would raise the final figure to 460,000 pesos (525.99 euros), and another increase of 40,000 pesos (45.73) in July 2024, to place the total amount at 500,000 pesos (571.7 euros).

During the negotiations that began last March, the union had demanded that the Government reach the figure of 500,000 pesos already this May, due to the “high” inflation that is taking place in Chile. This goal must be achieved as soon as possible, we cannot wait,” said the president of the union, David Acuña.

This amount, however, was the goal of the cabinet chaired by Gabriel Boric for the year 2026, at the end of his term. Despite their intention of a greater increase, from the Government, they had considered that it was necessary to reach a balance between the demand of the unions and the capacity of small and medium-sized companies to pay wages.

Last January an initial increase of 50,000 pesos (58.2 euros) was carried out, to which another 10,000 pesos (11.39 euros) were added, thus reaching 410,000 pesos (about 477 euros).

From the CUT they have celebrated that the talks to advance the arrival of the 500,000 pesos are advancing, as part of their “commitment” in the search to overcome the poverty line and create social policies that deliver “a good life” to workers.

The Government of Colombia, unions and employers have agreed on Thursday an agreement to increase the minimum wage by 16 % in the next year 2023, up to 1,160,000 Colombian pesos (227.6 euros).

The tripartite agreement took place on the last possible day for the negotiations to come to fruition. The President of the Government of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has been in charge of making this announcement, emphasizing that it represents a “recovery of purchasing power”.

“This increase will allow us to boost domestic demand among the most vulnerable sectors. I am convinced that this agreement will make the economy grow beyond the not very optimistic forecast of international organizations, thanks to the reactivation of domestic consumption,” he stressed.

For his part, the president of the Unitary Confederation of Workers (CUT, the country’s main union), Francisco Mlastés, has highlighted the importance of dialogue to reach agreements. “Colombians will be able to improve their purchasing power next year thanks to collective bargaining,” he stated.

In turn, the president of the Colombian Association of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Acopi), Rosemy Quintero, celebrated the achievement of this agreement in a Twitter video, although she recalled that SMEs need support, as they are the companies with a higher concentration of minimum wages.

The Italian Government has presented a bill in Parliament that includes 14.3 billion euros in aid for workers, companies and families with the aim of softening the economic crisis unleashed by rising prices.

“I confirm the Government’s will not to abandon workers, retirees and companies,” Prime Minister Mario Draghi said during a meeting at the Chigi Palace with labor unions, according to the newspaper Corriere della Sera.

The Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday the report presented by Draghi and the Minister of Economy, Daniele Franco, to ask Parliament for “authorization to resort to debt for a total amount of 14,300 million euros in 2022“.

On the other hand, the founder of the 5 Star Movement (M5S), the comedian Beppe Grillo, would have threatened the party’s leader, Giuseppe Conte, with leaving the formation if the two-term limit is repealed in the face of the early elections that will take place on September 25 after the resignation of Draghi as head of the Executive.

The vote will be the first held in the autumn in the country’s history, and Draghi will remain as caretaker prime minister until a new government takes office.
