The global economic growth could slow by 2.6 % in 2026, according to forecasts from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

According to the UN agency, this would initiate a period of fragility for world trade, falling from 4.7% in 2025 to between 1.5% and 2.5% in 2026, “due to the effects of geopolitical tensions on supply chains, maritime transport, and investment decisions.”

In the current context of geopolitical tensions, high energy prices, along with “transport disruptions, market volatility, and the search for safe-haven assets, will harm investment and demand,” the agency study indicates.

According to UNCTAD, developing economies are the most vulnerable due to uncertainty, increased fuel, food, and fertilizer costs, as well as the devaluation of their currencies, tighter financing conditions, and reduced investor confidence.

At the same time, the agency highlights that “the rise of artificial intelligence masks global trade figures, which were relatively positive at the beginning of the year but relied on products related to that technology, such as semiconductors, servers, and data processing equipment.”
