UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced Monday that hundreds of new North Sea oil and gas licenses will be issued, in addition to a carbon capture program that will create new jobs.

Sunak stressed that with the granting of these licenses, the country seeks to “avoid foreign dependence on energy.” Taking the deadline for the zero emission of pollutants in 2050 as a reference, the country would continue to depend on oil and gas to cover its energy needs.

Regarding the carbon capture programme, called the Acom project, the Prime Minister stressed that it will be located in St. Fergus, in the northeast of Scotland, and will be the first of its kind. The goal is to store the emissions in pipelines under the North Sea.

Sunak said it is a must to “invest in crucial industries like carbon capture and storage, rather than relying on more carbon-intensive gas imports from abroad.”

The measure has been taken considering the recent events regarding the cut-off of energy supply by Russia, which is considered a threat against energy security.
