End-to-end encryption minimizes the impact of cyberattacks that could lead to data theft. This tool can be optimized with applications that encrypt all messages and calls, blocking the excessive collection of metadata such as location and allowing users to control their data with features like self-destructing messages and two-factor authentication.

Of course, it’s vital not to share sensitive information, since, as we know, even “secure apps can be vulnerable to risks like phishing or malware.”

What else can users do? One of the expert recommendations is to look for features like disappearing messages or optional encrypted backups. Also, PIN/biometric protection is important, as is regularly updating apps to increase protection against new threats.

Likewise, it’s ideal to stay informed, read, and attend workshops or seminars on phishing, malware, online advertising, secure e-commerce, screen lock and configuration mechanisms, and other related topics.

As a first warning, experts point out creating a strong password or key. To do this, it is necessary to avoid using dates of birth, common names or family names, among others. The key should include lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, special characters. They also insist on not reusing them and keeping them in a safe place.

On the other hand, applying two-factor authentication, through which a personal code is sent to the user’s cell phone and provides a higher degree of security.

Since some wallets include functions for verifying transactions through a PIN code or fingerprint, cybersecurity companies recommend using them.

It is also important to regularly check the accounts associated with virtual wallets to verify that all records are in order.

Access to these wallets must be done from private devices. That is, a home computer or cell phone. To increase security, it is essential to keep the installed operating system and antivirus up to date, as well as avoid public WiFi connections and suspicious messages that may be received on your devices.

Obtaining information about the scam mechanisms that cybercriminals usually use is another effective tool to stay alert and avoid being victims of their attacks.

This omission resulted in a hacker accessing it, creating an embarrassing situation for the SEC.

The incident, which rocked the cryptocurrency markets, was caused by a fake approval of a Bitcoin ETF, published from the official SEC account at X.

On January 10, X’s security page (Safety) reported that the hack into the SEC account was due to a “SIM exchange hack“. This type of attack involves an unidentified actor taking control of the phone number associated with the SEC’s account and using it to access its official X page.

The X security team confirmed that the @SECGov account was compromised and that, following a preliminary investigation, it was determined that the attack was not due to a breach in X’s systems. Instead, it was the result of an unidentified individual gaining control of the phone number associated with the @SECGov account through a third party. In addition, they confirmed that the account did not have two-factor authentication enabled at the time of the commitment.

SIM exchange hacking is an identity theft technique where the attacker gains control over a victim’s phone number. This allows you to access social media accounts, banks and cryptocurrencies.

In this case, it is likely that the hacker persuaded an external telecommunications provider to transfer control of the phone number linked to the SEC account. If the hacker also knew the email associated with the account, he could use the phone number to reset the password and gain access.

ZachXBT, a blockchain detective, took advantage of the situation to ironically recall on Twitter the social media security tips previously given by Gary Gensler, president of the SEC, in response to X’s original security post.
