Cybercriminals have found that using artificial intelligence allows them to enhance their scams, making their deceptions more realistic and harder to detect. Recently, fake videos have surfaced impersonating internationally renowned figures, such as Lionel Messi or the CEO of a major organization. However, these scams also occur on a smaller scale, such as targeting a school principal in the United States. ESET, a leading proactive threat detection company, reviews some of the cases where deepfakes were the main tool used in scams that resulted in millions of dollars in losses or the compromise of sensitive information.

Deepfake is an artificial intelligence-based technique for synthesizing human images to create fake content from scratch, using existing videos or even just a still image. They are designed to replicate the appearance and voice of a real person.

“With the evolution of Artificial Intelligence, these videos and audio recordings seem increasingly real. Many exploit the image of public figures or well-known entities to say something false, as part of a scam that aims to obtain money or sensitive information,” says Camilo Gutiérrez Amaya, Head of the ESET Latin America Research Lab.

ESET compiled amazing, truly real, and recent cases

Lionel Messi: The Argentine football player is one of the most recognized personalities worldwide. In this case, cybercriminals exploited his popularity to carry out a deepfake scam, promoting an app that promised suspiciously high and irresistible earnings. The app in question was called “Wildcat Dive,” and in the fake video, Messi claimed it was one of his main sources of income and that it had helped many people earn money. Through advertisements on the social network Instagram, the cybercriminals distributed snippets of a fabricated interview, which was based on a real interview the footballer had given to a well-known Argentine streaming program.

Arup: In early 2024, the architectural firm that designed the Sydney Opera House and the Etihad Stadium, Arup, made headlines when a financial employee at the company’s Hong Kong office received a video call from (allegedly) the company’s CFO. The result of the meeting was 15 transfers totaling over $25 million. The bad news is that it was actually a deepfake, so the transfers had not been approved by anyone in the company.

Ferrari: In this case, cybercriminals attempted a deepfake voice scam, impersonating Benedetto Vigna, the CEO of the automotive company. In July 2024, using voice imitation, they tried to convince the company’s finance executives to make a large money transfer. One of the employees became suspicious and asked a question that the AI used in the scam could not answer correctly. Not only did this attack fail, but it prompted Ferrari to reinforce its employee training to prevent similar scams in the future.

WPP: One of the world’s largest advertising companies was also the target of a scam attempt involving a deepfake. In mid-2024, cybercriminals used a fake WhatsApp account, a voice recording, and YouTube footage of a virtual meeting to impersonate the company’s CFO, Mark Read. The malicious actors organized a meeting via Microsoft Teams, under the pretext of creating a new company, and used this as a lure to obtain money and sensitive personal data from the company. According to WPP, this attack was unsuccessful thanks to the company’s vigilance and the training its employees received to detect these scams.

School in Baltimore: Not only high-profile companies are targeted by deepfakes. In this case, a school principal was heard making racist and antisemitic comments. The incident went viral (over 2 million views) and resulted in death threats against the educator. After an investigation, local police confirmed that the audio was a fake, manipulated with AI.

Elon Musk: A cryptocurrency investment scam used Elon Musk’s image to spread ads on X and YouTube, promoting supposed investment opportunities that promised high returns on Bitcoin. The ads included a link to a fraudulent website where unsuspecting users were asked to make initial deposits to participate in the alleged investment. According to the US Federal Trade Commission, the scam, which included deepfakes, resulted in losses of over $80 million for more than 7,000 victims who believed in the supposed investment.

President Zelensky: Politics was also affected by deepfake scams. In March 2022, during the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, a fake video circulated showing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urging his troops to surrender. The president responded almost immediately with a genuine video posted on his official channels.

While deepfake scams are becoming increasingly realistic and difficult to detect, ESET shares some best practices to reduce the risk of falling victim to these types of scams

Be wary of eye-catching advertisements that offer an opportunity for easy and unrealistic gains. Also be suspicious of those that feature well-known celebrities.

Pay attention to the video quality: if there are visual glitches, poor synchronization, or low resolution, it is likely a deepfake.

Use security software on all devices to help block fake websites and emails containing malicious content.

For businesses, it is important to not authorize payments solely based on a phone call or video call. Consider using keywords or internal codes as an additional verification method.

Continuous training is essential: being trained to recognize the warning signs of deepfakes and scams is another key practice.

Take advantage of the tools currently available to detect deepfakes and combat misinformation.

Bancamiga and this high-altitude training

As in the phases of a flight, entrepreneurs from the Zulia region had access to elements to overcome challenges and take the path to achieve success in their businesses. The takeoff was with Mauricio Parilli, director of the civil association Aprendo y Emprendo, who spoke about fundamental aspects of the ideation and innovation process.

The consultant and organizational coach Eugenio Pérez Toledano addressed the participants on strategic vision, leadership and teamwork. As the trip continued at cruising speed, the digital business consultant Joco González spoke about agility, resilience, visibility and the impact that ventures must have to be sustainable.

For the descent and landing, the economist and motivational speaker Maickel Melamed inspired the attendees with his optimism and sowed hope in that ideal destination that people want to reach with their business initiatives.

The training day ended with the surprise presentation of the young people of the Venezuelan Robotics Team, the pride of the state of Zulia and all of Venezuela, who won the gold medal at the First Global Challenge held in Singapore in 2023 and the silver medal at the most recent edition of the competition held in Greece.

Thus, more than 180 participants were trained with Bancamiga during the virtual forum Digital Revolution: marketing strategies powered by AI for entrepreneurs, taught by González, who is a specialist in digital business, e-commerce and digital transformation of companies, with more than 20 years of experience in the area.

The conference was the first online training of Bancamiga’s business development program, aimed at training people with business initiatives, as well as small entrepreneurs who contribute to the sustainable development of the country.

Joco González began his speech by showing practical examples of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support people in their daily tasks. Then it provided valuable content to find innovative and efficient solutions that can be applied in the marketing strategies of the ventures.

“AI is a coming wave. Although it is more than 50 years old, since 2022 it has become something easily accessible to everyone” through “platforms where we interact, chat with it, and it becomes our best ally,” he assured.

Joco González pointed out that people who are afraid of this technology must understand that it is just another tool that can be used and that it should be understood as a virtual assistant for the tasks that are required.

In real time

According to the expert, some of the benefits that entrepreneurs can have in seconds with AI tools are the automation of processes; optimal data analysis; customization of marketing strategies; product and service innovation; improvements in customer experience; have greater precision of market trends and behavior, among others.

In the field of marketing, he highlighted that there are several advances with AI tools that allow personalizing experiences in real time by adapting content, recommendations and specific offers based on customer behavior, preferences and historical data.

González also mentioned that AI allows the automation of repetitive tasks such as sending emails, managing campaigns or publishing on social networks. Other advantages are chatbots and virtual assistants to support business management.

Practical demonstrations

Using live tools and responding to participants’ requests for examples, the facilitator demonstrated the use of AI to create names, profile ideal clients, write texts, strategies or proposals, among multiple other applications.

During the activity, he told the attendees that AI must be very good at specifications. You don’t have to settle for the first answers. You have to be increasingly demanding or specific.

“If we ask for something very ambiguous, the artificial intelligence is going to respond with something very ambiguous, and the worst thing is that we are going to love it and I say that, because in truth, we can get more out of it,” the consultant noted.

González mentioned that in Venezuela you can use some free artificial intelligence platforms such as openai.com (only with VPN), gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com, supplied by Bancamiga.

He added that the cooperation agreement between both institutions supports UNDP objectives such as “modernization, innovation, digitalization and incorporation of new technologies, value chaining, supplier development and everything that means modernizing the business scheme, so that they are more productive, serve their customers better and create more jobs. “We are getting this right in Venezuela, and Bancamiga is a strategic ally in that process.”

Carmelo De Grazia, President of the bank’s Board of Directors, thanked that the institution was taken into account “for this alliance whose fundamental purpose is the training of entrepreneurs. This is a purpose that we have fulfilled with more than 2,000 entrepreneurs trained during the year 2023, in the training programs shared with UNDP Venezuela and other allies. “We want to continue supporting this objective that contributes to the development of the national productive sector.”

Strategic cooperation between UNDP Venezuela and Bancamiga

In October 2022, both organizations signed their first institutional cooperation alliance. Bancamiga ─ the only UNDP allied bank in Venezuela ─ has successfully executed, together with the multilateral organization, business development initiatives such as the En Marcha Digital methodology, which contributed to the improvement of digital capabilities of 80 small productive units and enterprises in 13 states of the country that participated. in the initiative.

The joint work between Bancamiga and the UNDP reaffirmed the commitment of the parties to boost economic growth and create opportunities for both the commercial and business sectors.

Based on the new cooperation agreement, the institutions will continue to collaborate to implement methodological models developed by UNDP, such as the En Marcha Digital and Ruta del Entrepreneurship programs.

Likewise, they will focus on strengthening the capabilities of entrepreneurs or small business owners, bringing them closer to financing options and jointly developing initiatives to improve the e-commerce opportunities of program participants, among others, concludes an institutional informative statement.

These training activities, organized with the support of public and private organizations, seek to strengthen the capabilities of microentrepreneurs and entrepreneurs, ratifying the bank’s social responsibility policy, established by the president of the Board of Directors of Bancamiga Banco Universal, Carmelo De Grazia, with the purpose of contributing to the economic development of the country.

At both meetings, Bancamiga’s Director of Social Responsibility, Milagro González, welcomed the participants, who were then able to listen to lectures by experts such as Mauricio Parilli, director of Aprendo y Emprendo, who spoke about the maturation and growth of ventures towards sustainability. The innovation coach, Luis Moreno, explained how knowing your customers allows you to increase business development.

Oskayda Alvarado, Entrepreneurship Manager at Bancamiga, presented the financing opportunities and the portfolio of products and services for small entrepreneurs. Likewise, on each day, there were talks dedicated to providing marketing keys and digital channels to boost sales.

Training from Petare to refine the microenterprise

One of the training sessions was held at the César Rengifo Theater, where about 250 Emprender Juntos participants gathered, who exceeded the capacity of this space located in the Historic Center of Petare, said Yoana Díaz Tovar, coordinator of this platform in the Sucre municipality of Miranda state.

“The expectations of this meeting are broad, strengthened by the private bank, which has taken us into account and is making firm alliances with entrepreneurs,” he celebrated.

The representative to the National Assembly for the state of Miranda, Gabriela Chacón, assured that the forum for entrepreneurs “is a luxury, because not all private banks have the intention or insistence to share the joint responsibility of promoting entrepreneurship.”

Bancamiga products and services

At the César Rengifo Theater, the forum participants benefited from an account opening operation to obtain the Mastercard Debit Card, the acquisition of Bancamiga Points of Sale and advice on the services that the bank offers to small business owners.

“Bancamiga is strengthening new entrepreneurs to get ahead in this economic situation. With this help, we can move forward with a business. The attention has been very good. We are very grateful for this opportunity that they give people to express themselves with their knowledge, put it to the test and take advantage of it, and no longer be dependent for having their own work alternative,” said Luis Noriega, gastronomic entrepreneur.

Dayana Ortega, who sells Creole chocolates and sweets, attended the forum to “take advantage of the Bancamiga event to open accounts and acquire products such as points of sale, with the full intention of strengthening our businesses and helping the people to continue undertaking, continue creating and continue believing in our country.”

Entrepreneur movement

The second training day for Bancamiga entrepreneurs took place in the Auditorium of the National Pipeline Institute, in Chuao, which brought together more than 100 representatives of the Manuelita Sáenz Women’s Movement and the Great Transportation Mission.

Eliana Salazar, president of the Manuelita Sáenz Women’s Movement, thanked the organized entrepreneurs for their support, through training “to nourish us, grow and transform us.” Likewise, he described the training day as an example of “integration” of public institutions and private companies.

The forum “has strengthened me a lot, because I had no knowledge in several subjects. This is nourishing me to consolidate my entrepreneurship and formalize it. It is very important to study to undertake. It is very important that the private banking sector supports us,” said Lenis Llamoza, entrepreneur in the gastronomic field.

“This day has been excellent, with a good team of trainers with a lot of information. I took all the tools with me, I didn’t know many points,” said Mary Moreno, who is dedicated to the production and marketing of Greek yogurt.

Mecelenia Ortiz, Training Coordinator of the Manuelita Sáenz Women’s Movement, said that the training activity represents “an important motivation, because the majority of the participants have already worked on their entrepreneurship ideas, they just require tools, knowledge so that they can elevate their production.”

The 10-week program is aimed at people who have small production units from different sectors (manufacturing, trade or services) and who have been operating for at least one year.

En Marcha Digital provides the participants with accompaniment and specialized technical assistance by UNDP-certified consultants, virtual training from home or workplace, access to support materials and a training certificate at the end of the program.

During the training process, the participants focus on driving results and changes in their businesses in the short term, through the definition of strategies and action plans, the management of tools for their digital transformation and the generation of skills to grow their company.

As in the first cohort, the space is limited to 40 participants, who will be selected by a technical team and will be notified in a timely manner.

People interested in participating should take into account that it is essential to have access to the Internet and electronic equipment (smartphone, tablet, computer or laptop), to have availability of at least two hours a week for training processes and consultancies, as well as the real intention to innovate in their business and achieve business adaptation to new technologies.

The application process is simple, all you have to do is fill in the information requested in the form available on the website www.bancamiga.com, which will be open until this Friday, July 28.

Proven success hand in hand with UNDP and Bancamiga

As a socially responsible company, Bancamiga carries out various training programs to strengthen the business skills of Venezuelans. Among these initiatives is En Marcha Digital, in alliance with UNDP in Venezuela, honoring the memorandum of understanding signed between both organizations, whose objective is mutual cooperation to strengthen training initiatives, technical assistance and advice for entrepreneurs and small businessmen in the country.

The first cohort of En Marcha Digital, sponsored by Bancamiga, was carried out successfully between the months of February and April of this year. During this time, 41 participants from 12 states of the country had access and enjoyed the benefits of the program.

The small entrepreneurs who completed the training process experienced the monthly increase in sales and digital maturity of their businesses, established biosafety protocols, as well as gender equality policies and good environmental practices, defined their customer segment and determined their cost structure, as well as sales plans, among other aspects.

Soon, Bancamiga and UNDP in Venezuela will announce the launch of a second business development program, called Ruta del Emprendimiento.

For this reason, IESA and Bancamiga present a new cohort of the Emprende Program, which will have 200 scholarships aimed at providing participants with the possibility of validating, from the virtual classroom, their entrepreneurial ideas effectively and moving forward successfully.

For this new edition of the program, the 200 scholarships awarded by Bancamiga are part of its Social Responsibility management aimed at promoting training spaces that allow strengthening the entrepreneurial capacities of Venezuelans.

Bancamiga invites you to apply until June 12

The course lasts eight weeks, the banking institution said in a statement; It is designed so that participants enter the platform at available times, in order to review the content and weekly activities. Those interested have until June 12 to complete the application form at the following link: https://acortar.link/q4gyyD.

This training experience covers a total of 80 academic hours and includes electronic teaching material, a certificate of attendance, as well as the advice of a mentor endorsed by the most important management school in the country. It is essential that participants have a computer, tablets or smartphones with an internet connection to access the virtual classroom.

Professor Edwin Ojeda, coordinator of the Emprende Program and researcher at IESA’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, assures that “Emprende’s main strength is that it makes entrepreneurs go out into the streets to validate their business ideas. It allows them to build a model and simultaneously validate customer needs.”
