The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) announced the inauguration of the Digital Futures Program for small and medium-sized tourism enterprises (SMEs), with the purpose of improving and facilitating the adoption of new technologies and thus promoting the recovery of the tourism sector in the economy. global.

According to the statements of Zurab Pololikashvili, UNWTO Secretary-General, “small businesses are the backbone of tourism” and their recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic is essential.

The initiative was designed jointly with Mastercard and focused on SMEs because “they constitute up to 80 % of all tourism businesses.” The agency set a goal of contacting one million SMEs to “provide them with the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary to take advantage of the possibilities of new and emerging technologies.”

Digital dimensions for SMEs

The UNWTO secretary explained that with the implementation of the Digital Futures Program, small and medium-sized companies will be able to recover from the consequences of the pandemic, which affected the sector so much, and thus increase the “possibilities for innovation and new technologies”.

The Program is based on tools for diagnosing digital readiness, taking the following key digital dimensions as references: connectivity, business growth,celectronic commerce, big data, analytics, as well as payments and security.
