Venezuela’s economic diversification process is strengthened by incorporating tourism as a key element of growth, according to a recent statement by the Minister of Tourism, Leticia Gómez.

The official emphasized that, in this regard, they are “working together with universities and schools to develop professional and community training mechanisms in tourism.”

“During the session dedicated to tourism as one of the key drivers of economic development in countries, held in the Russian Federation, Gómez stated that tourism had an impact on global economy by 2024 with $11.1 trillion.”

She also highlighted that the sector is generating more jobs globally, “with more than 300 million jobs.”

Regarding the country, Gómez noted that it has signed bilateral agreements with various nations and “has designed a specific tourism collaboration program where training, education, and experience sharing are key components.”

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru, Roberto Sánchez, announced the emergency declaration of the tourism sector, which will be in force until the end of 2022, and which will serve to alleviate the effects that the restrictions due to the coronavirus are having on the country’s economy.

“The Emergency Plan for the Tourism Sector aims to establish sectoral measures to mitigate the serious crisis that tourism is going through as a result of COVID-19“, the Ministry detailed in a statement.

This declaration comes after the “coordinated work” between the Peruvian Executive and the private sector, which has served to agree on financial and economic measures that benefit tourism entrepreneurs throughout the country.

“We will boost public-private investments in tourism and strengthen tourism facilitation and promotion actions,” said Sánchez, who added that the Executive led by President Pedro Castillo has assumed “a real commitment” to reactivate the sector.

Although the Ministry has not specifically explained what the measures will be, it has detailed that it will be a financial rescue, with which it intends to facilitate and promote tourist activity in the country.

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) revealed through a report the figures released of the contribution that the tourism sector offers to the world Gross Domestic Product (GDP) showing a fall of 49.1 % in 2020, the half of the figures expressed in 2019.

According to the annual report, the impact it generated on the economy caused by the health crisis was surprising, in addition to the consequent loss of 4.5 billion dollars for this important sector.

“The huge losses show the first complete picture of a sector that is struggling to survive in the face of travel restrictions and quarantines, which continue to threaten the recovery of the world economy,” according to the report.

The Council pointed out that the loss in human capital was also significant, affecting 62 million jobs in the sector, representing a drop of 18.5 %, and only 272 million people were left with employment.

As specified in the statement, “these job losses have been seen in the entire ecosystem of the sector, especially in small and medium-sized companies, which represent 80 % of all companies in the activity. Furthermore, as one of the most diverse sectors in the world, the impact on women, youth and minorities was significant.”
