Tobacco bans in France will be extended to beaches, parks and areas near educational centers. This was announced by the authorities, together with a considerable increase in the price of cigarettes.

“Smoking bans and price increases work. There is scientific consensus on this worldwide,” said the French Minister of Health, Aurelien Rousseau, this Tuesday in the presentation of a new National Program to Fight Smoking.

One of the objectives of this measure, in addition to preserving the health of citizens, is precisely to achieve “a generation without tobacco on the horizon of 2030-2032.” For the French government, it would be an important advance to reduce deaths from tobacco by 50 or 100 a day.

France’s new anti-smoking program for 2023-2027 also includes a ban on disposable electronic cigarettes. In the opinion of the Minister of Health, these devices are “an aberration for health and an aberration for the environment.”

According to local statistics, tobacco is the first cause of preventable mortality in the European country, “the first cause of mortality from cancer and also the first cause of mortality for those under 65 years of age.” Every year it is estimated that 75,000 people die from this cause.
