Germany ranks second in Europe with an average of one teleworking day per week, while the UK surpasses it with 1.5 “home office” days per week.

Compared to 34 countries in the world, Germany is surpassed by Canada, with 1.7 days of teleworking per week, the United States, with 1.4 days; and Australia, with 1.3 days per week. The average is just under 0.9 days.

In Europe, Finland and the Netherlands also have around one day a week, but Germany is only a few decimal places behind. In Austria, the average is 0.8 days; in Poland and Italy, 0.7; and in France and Denmark, 0.6 days of teleworking per week.

The study, which is based on an employee survey, found especially little work from home in South Korea, at 0.4 days a week, and Japan and Greece, at 0.5 days.

For Ifo researcher Mathias Dolls, there is no simple explanation for the differences between countries. The expert considers that the sectoral mix of the countries, the degree of digitization, but also the experiences with closures due to quarantines during the coronavirus could play a role in this trend.

“We see that employees value the opportunity to work from home,” Dolls said. “However, there is a gap between the number of teleworking days desired by employees and those expected by employers.”

On average, globally, workers want about 0.8 more days of “home office” than their employers plan. In Germany, this difference is somewhat smaller, at 0.6 days. On average, the around 2,500 respondents in Germany would like to have around 1.8 working days from home.

For the study, more than 42,000 full-time employees from around the world were surveyed in the period from April to May 2023.

This was reported by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates through his personal blog.

The publication is part of a reflection made by the billionaire on the future of teleworking and the changes it will undergo as a result of metaverses. Gates believes that the coronavirus radically changed the work process. Now people do not have to attend their jobs, to the point that companies that never considered that option for their employees now work remotely.

According to the co-founder of Microsoft “these changes will only intensify in the coming years and teleworking will attract more and more people to the metaverse” to the point that in the next 2 or 3 years “most virtual meetings will pass from the grids of 2D camera images, to the metaverse, a 3D space with digital avatars.”

Developing the labor metaverse

For Gates, telecommuting limits spontaneous interaction between workers. However, thanks to the metaverse it will be possible, using 3D graphics, “to meet other people in a virtual space that reproduces the experience of being with them in the same place” through personalized avatars.

Last month the tech giant announced its procedure to introduce virtual reality and augmented reality equipment into its Teams video conferencing and teamwork service.

On the other hand, the furor stimulated by the metaverse is prompting different investors to acquire digital real estate. One of the companies is Republic Realm which disclosed the purchase of digital land in the Sandbox for about 4.3 million dollars.

The document aims to modify the law on protection against infections and proposes: “In the case of office work or comparable activities, the employer must offer employees the possibility of carrying out these activities at home if there are no compelling operational reasons. The workers must accept this offer if there are no reasons to the contrary on their part.”

Compulsory adaptation

Sources close to the Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals who are negotiating a possible coalition agreement to form the future government, pointed out that the parties have not yet reached consensus on the matter.

The foreseen regulation on compulsory telework is part of the bill on the so-called “3G” standard in the workplace, according to which only vaccinated, recovered and negative COVID-test people will be able to go to work.

Germany introduced teleworking under the so-called “emergency brake” to curb infections, a measure that expired at the end of June.

Since then, companies must continue to maintain hygiene standards and offer two weekly coronavirus tests to employees.

However, with the basic plan, people have 45 free minutes to make video calls to a maximum of 30 people simultaneously and can also “establish security parameters and share the screen.”

Its operation is very similar to the video calling service of the Zoom platform ; “you just have to start a call and share the link with the participants.” Additionally, they can “integrate with Slack, Outlook and Google Calendar” allowing you to schedule video calls and integrate them into the email calendar.

The proposal specifies that both teleworkers and face-to-face employees must have the same rights and obligations, which is why within the project it is established that their performance will be measured under the same standards.

It is also attributed that they will have the opportunity to opt for promotions or changes of modality as long as their performance, experience and preparation make them eligible for it.

The intention expressed by Villegas is to establish equal pay in different areas and for this the legislator said that he has held meetings with the representative of the Ministry of Labor, Luis Miguel DeCamps, in order to unify criteria and points of view with the institution that regulates labor issues in the country.

In this sense, the legislator stated that within the project, remuneration is established for employees for the use of their personal tools, such as the Internet, electricity and local telephone.
