The World Health Organization opened the application period this May to choose a new Director-General. The person elected to succeed Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who has held the position since 2017, will be announced during the 80th World Health Assembly, scheduled for May 2027.

The WHO has been undergoing budget cuts in certain departments for several months, although it maintains its efforts and commitment to global health.

It is important to clarify that the current Director-General’s term ends on August 15 of next year. Given that the statutes establish a maximum limit of two consecutive terms, Tedros cannot seek reelection. Therefore, the organization is preparing to select three candidates from among all applicants to determine a successor.

The list of candidates will be updated as member countries register their nominees. However, two names are already circulating in the process: Hanan Balkhy, a physician from Saudi Arabia and current WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean; and Hans Kluge, a Belgian physician who currently serves as WHO Regional Director for Europe.

The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has announced that the WHO has declared the end of the global health emergency by Covid-19.

“Yesterday, the Emergency Committee met for the fifteenth time and recommended that I declare the end of the public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice,” he said.

“It has been a decision taken with caution. I will not hesitate to declare the emergency again if the situation changes,” Tedros said.

The WHO director general emphasized the understanding that the pandemic has not come to an end. Covid-19 has left, in just over three years, affected 765 million people and has caused the death of 20 million across the planet.

The director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, believes that China should cooperate more in the investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, the first cases of which were detected in December 2019 in Wuhan.

These statements were made by the WHO representative at a press conference in Geneva, where he stated: “We hope there will be better cooperation so that we know what really happened.“

Additionally, Ghebreyesus also referred to the conclusions of an investigation being carried out jointly by Chinese scientists and members of the WHO that indicated that there was little probability of the leakage of the coronavirus.

For the WHO representative, it would be essential to share all the data that make up the study and analyze it to determine what really happened. “The first problem is to share the raw data and I said from the conclusions of the first phase of the investigation that this problem had to be solved; and, the second, is that there was a premature attempt to reduce the number of hypotheses such as that of the laboratory in transmission to humans”, Tedros indicated.

According to the conclusions of this joint investigation, a leak of the new coronavirus was “very unlikely, although the thesis of transmission from an animal to a person through an intermediate animal, not yet identified, prevailed.”
