The Indian government continues its efforts to secure a new 12.5 % ​​tariff on its exports to the United States.

Authorities from both nations are holding talks “under the procedure provided for in Section 301.” India is also collaborating with the United States on “finalizing a framework agreement, as announced on February 2, 2026,” according to statements from the Ministry of Commerce.

The US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, recently referred to unfair competition for American workers and the US economy.

India’s pursuit of preferential tariffs comes after the Trump Administration announced the possibility of a 10 % tariff surcharge for six economies, including the European Union, which already have partial bans on the practice, and a 12.5 % ​​surcharge for the remaining affected countries, including India.
