The Forsa population institute presented data resulting from a survey on digital payments in Germany, which highlights the increase in transactions with smartphones and digital watches, despite the fact that in the country a high percentage of them are still made in cash.

According to the Forsa survey, in which 1,732 adults participated, 44 % of German citizens use a bank card to pay their payments, while 30 % use euros in cash. Regarding the most popular payment methods, smartphones and smartwatches are gaining more and more space, with 13 % and 4 %, respectively.

The survey was carried out between September and October of this year, with results showing an increase in the use of smartphones and smartwatches to cancel payments in Germany for goods or services.

“Digital technologies increasingly shape the way we use money,” said Albrecht Kiel, head of Central Europe at credit card issuer Visa.

Of the survey participants, 19 % stated that they avoid stores where only cash payments are possible. They emphasize that when paying at the store, supermarket or bakery, the most important thing is speed. Which is favored by the use of the telephone and the smartwatch.

The metropolis of New York launched a census aimed at the population of recent immigrant arrivals over 18 years of age, in order to identify those who meet the requirements to apply for work permits.

Mayor Eric Adams told workers at the city’s immigrant shelters that they are conducting this survey among the approximately 40,000 asylum seekers over the age of 18 under his care.

Thousands of jobs are said to be available both in the city and in the agricultural fields of the north of the state, but only for those who have a work permit, which must be linked to an asylum application.

To date, the city has tested more than 10,000 immigrants, an effort that will continue over the next two weeks, according to Adams.

According to data provided by the Mayor’s Office, in 16 months more than 113,300 immigrants have been admitted to the public shelter system, and of these, more than 59,900 still remain under the city’s care.

Germans’ confidence in democracy is rapidly diminishing, according to a survey by the Körber Foundation released Thursday in Hamburg.

While in the European autumn of 2021 almost a third of those interviewed stated that they had less or little confidence in German democracy, this summer more than half of Germans (54 %) agreed with this statement.

The loss of confidence of citizens in political parties is even more dramatic. In 2020, 29 % of Germans said they trusted the parties, while a year later the figure dropped to 20 %. Now the nadir has been reached, as barely 9 % of respondents expressed confidence in political parties.

Some 1,113 adults participated in the survey carried out between June and July of this year by the consultancy policy matters, at the request of the Körber Foundation. Nearly 90% affirmed in the survey that life in freedom, equality before the law, the right to freedom of expression and free and secret elections are important to them.

At the same time, 71 % considered that the leaders and the media live in their own world, far from the rest of the population. Meanwhile, almost half of Germans (46%) considered that the country is not very fair or not at all fair.

According to the survey, 86 % of the citizens of Germany would like to be more involved in important decisions. This applies above all to the municipal (93%) and regional (91 %) spheres. However, the Germans also considered a greater participation at the federal level (85%) important. At the same time, more than half of those surveyed responded affirmatively to whether politicians “who have more power and will to assert themselves in order to make decisions quickly and firmly” are needed to solve problems.

The director of the department of democracy, commitment and cohesion of the Körber Foundation, Sven Tetzlaff, considered that the results indicate that the confidence of the Germans in democracy and its institutions is on a slippery slope. “This is a worrying development, along with the economic concerns of citizens,” he said.

Tetzlaff pointed out that half of those surveyed questioned whether the country is prepared to carry out the transformation tasks. “This significantly slows down people’s willingness to change to face big challenges,” the expert said.

Binance, the leading platform for buying and selling digital currencies, is experiencing a steady loss of ground against its main competitors, according to data provided by analytics firm Kaiko. This decline coincides with the rise of other exchange houses, such as Huobi, Bybit and OKX’s.

Traditionally, Binance, led by Changpeng Zhao, has overwhelmingly dominated the market and positioned itself as the gold standard in cryptocurrency trading. However, regulators in the United States and other markets have constantly criticized the company, which has seriously affected its business model and, consequently, has impacted its users.

By contrast, its competitors paint a brighter picture, especially in Asia, where some regulations in places like Hong Kong or Japan are leaning toward a more relaxed stance on regulatory measures. This has generated positive momentum for cryptocurrency trading in the region, unlike in the United States.

Binance’s current situation is a stark reminder that the company is losing steam due to regulatory pressure. Both the CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) and the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) have filed lawsuits against the platform for carrying out operations without the necessary licenses within the US territory.

According to Kaiko, data analysis on spot trading shows a noticeable reversal in Binance’s market dominance. By July, its market share fell to 70 % from 90 % at the start of the year. Meanwhile, competitors like OKX’s have seen 11 % growth since January.

Furthermore, other rival platforms such as Huobi and Bybit have also increased their market share by 9 % and 7 % respectively in the same time period. It should be noted that these data refer specifically to the volume of cash or “spot” trade.

Binance’s loss of dominance is partly due to measures implemented by US regulators. Clara Medalie, Kaiko’s director of research, points out that one of the reasons behind this drop is related to the removal of zero-commission options from the platform. Currently, zero fees only apply to trading BTC with the TrueUSD stablecoin.

This is one of the conclusions recently reached by a study by the Spanish Association of Video Game and Entertainment Software Producers and Developers (DEV) in its “Radiography of Spanish Video Game Development Professionals”, which aims to give learn more about the reality of the sector and analyze the perceptions of professionals dedicated to video game development.

This study was carried out from an anonymous survey in which 465 professionals from the video game industry participated. It happens to 44 % of the people surveyed, who claim to work between 40 and more than 60 hours a week, while 61 % of the total concludes that they have worked between 41 and more than 90 hours a week when asked about the time spent in a week during the last year.

However, DEV determined that people who have worked more than 90 hours a week have claimed to have done so of their own free will and not under any obligation. In relation to platforms and performance, the results of the survey show that computers continue to be the main platform for developers, since they are chosen by 63 % of the total.

Inflation has impacted or will negatively impact the cost of the school year for Spaniards, who will spend an average of 419 euros per child, although they see digital tools as a way to save between 11 % and 30 %.

Compared to last year, an increase in the average cost per child of 94.84 euros is perceived. The autonomous communities most affected by inflation are Asturias, Canarias, Aragón, Castilla y León and the Community of Madrid. This is how a recent survey carried out by the GoStudent private class platform collects it.

53 % of Spaniards allocate between 11 % and 30 % of their salary to expenses related to going back to school and consider that the use of digital tools can help minimize this expense: 43 % of parents in our country think that, for example, e-books or online tutoring could help them save considerably.

On the other hand, those surveyed affirm that this year the cost per child will rise to 419 euros on average compared to 324 euros the previous year, which represents an increase of almost 30 %. The great part of this expense comes from the purchase of books and school supplies, uniforms as well as extracurricular and support activities (73 % of Spanish parents have enrolled their children in private classes at least once and 52 % are considering it) for the new course.

Another of the noteworthy aspects of the study is that 72 % consider private online classes as a good way to save resources, thanks to their flexible nature and variety of schedules. And, more specifically, almost 50 % of those surveyed affirm that the use of private online classes will help save on their children’s academic training during this course.

New technologies stand out in the educational sector

The students that today are found in primary and secondary classrooms are digital natives and for this reason the educational sector is adopting new technologies to incorporate new ways of teaching through video games, artificial intelligence (AI) or computer science virtual reality.

The applications of technologies such as AI allow the creation of personalized educational plans for each student based on the profile and needs of each student. In Spain, 23 % of schools have adaptive learning tools. In addition, ‘online’ tutorials already account for 14 % of the total number of private classes that take place every day.

According to the GoStudent Education Report, Spanish parents have the best opinion about adaptive learning and the use of artificial intelligence in education. 55 % welcome these technologies taking part in their children’s education.
