During the parliamentary elections in Suriname, held six weeks ago, the first woman, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, was elected. She has signed an alliance with the other political parties to begin her presidential term.

Opposition candidate Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, 71, is a doctor by profession and “has promised to work to make our wealth accessible to all our people.”

Geerlings-Simons belongs to the National Democratic Party. Her running mate, Gregory Rusland, of the Surinamese National Party, will serve as vice president. “Both secured the support of 34 members of the National Assembly, the exact number needed for election in the first round.”

The president-elect, who will take office on July 16, declared: “I will use all my knowledge and strength to make our wealth available to all our people.” She added that she is aware of the responsibility ahead: “an even greater responsibility for being the first woman to hold this position. I don’t need many words. I thank you, and we will get to work.”

As background on Geerlings-Simons’s political career, it is worth mentioning that she served as president of the National Assembly of Suriname between 2010 and 2020. She was the second woman to hold that office, and in 2024 she was elected leader of the NDP, founded by the late former president Desi Bouterse.
