In 2022, around 4.2 billion people were affected by internet censorship, according to a Surfshark study.

The company tracked 112 instances of restrictions in 32 countries, recording outages in 196 countries and territories. More than half of the world’s population was affected by internet censorship in 2022, according to the study.

The VPN service company has compiled cases of legal control of Internet activity, manipulation of what can be seen and downloaded, and government action on platforms and social networks to hinder the dissemination of information.

Internet outages can be categorized into government outages, local outages, and national outages, with the average duration of an internet connection outage being 33 hours and 114 days for social media censorship.

In 2022 there were 40 % fewer interruptions than in 2021, but censorship affected 2.3 billion people with 78 new cases, bringing the total affected to 4.2 billion.

Asia was the continent most affected by internet interruptions, with 47 % of the new global cases of censorship, and at the end of 2022, 41 cases of censorship remained in progress.
