This Tuesday the decision of the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, to close the embassy in Ecuador, as well as the consulates in Quito, the capital, and the city of Guayaquil, was announced.

The measure was announced by the president during his participation in the extraordinary virtual Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), which was convened to analyze this issue.

Maduro indicated that the measure is immediately applicable in response to the “irruption of the Ecuadorian Police into the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in Quito and Noboa’s subsequent statements regarding this fact.”

The president of Venezuela declared: “I have ordered to close our embassy in Ecuador, close the consulate in Quito, immediately close the consulate in Guayaquil, and return diplomatic personnel to Venezuela immediately. We have a chargé d’affaires, Professor Pedro Sassone, from here I give him the order to prepare everything, close, return, until international law is expressly restored in Ecuador.”
