The first submarine optic cable that will connect the Chilean city of Valparaíso with Sydney, the capital of Australia, could soon become a reality thanks to an agreement signed on Wednesday, June 4, between the Chilean company Desarrollo País and Google.

This project, called the Humboldt Cable, will be the first underwater fiber optic cable to cross the South Pacific and connect South America with Asia and Oceania. Its features include an approximate length of 14,800 kilometers, a projected lifespan of 25 years, and a capacity of 144 terabytes per second.

“The project seeks to consolidate Chile as a digital hub in the region and make it Latin America’s direct digital gateway to Asia and Oceania.”

Chilean Minister of Transport and Telecommunications Juan Carlos Muñoz emphasized that construction of the Humboldt Cable will begin this year and is expected to be completed by 2027.

According to Patricio Rey, General Manager of Country Development, he emphasized why “in a complex geopolitical context, it is important to strengthen national communications.”

Meanwhile, Cristian Ramos, Director of Telecommunications Infrastructure for Google in Latin America, asserted that this project “will bring investment to the digital economy and other areas as diverse as mining and astronomy.”

The company Meta, owned by Mark Zuckerberg, announced a new project to build a submarine cable that crosses the world to continue its development and strengthen its presence in the market.

Although it is in its initial stage, Meta has indicated that it is “a submarine fiber optic cable of more than 40,000 kilometers” that will have an investment of $2,000 million.

“Meta is expected to offer more information at the beginning of next year, including the route of the cable and its capacity. When it is finished, the submarine cable will offer Meta a direct and exclusive connection for data traffic worldwide,” they have indicated.

Meta is the second-largest driver of Internet traffic worldwide through its fixed and mobile network facilities.

The project could exceed $10 billion as it progresses, as the cable is expected to follow “a W-shaped route, connecting the US East Coast to India via South Africa, and then returning to the US West Coast via Australia.”
