The agreement was reached just hours after GM workers went on strike.

Unifor President Lana Payne said in a statement that GM agreed to the union’s demands related to the strike at the Oshawa Assembly Plant, the St. Catherines Powertrain Plant and the Ford Parts Distribution Center. Woodstock.

“Faced with the disruption of these key facilities, General Motors had no choice but to take our demands seriously and accept them,” Payne explained.

The provisional agreement, which must be ratified by GM workers in Canada, parallels the one reached by Unifor with Ford in late September. Among the key provisions of the agreement, GM commits to raising wages by 20 % to 25 % (depending on occupation), offering a subsidy to workers starting in December 2024 to offset rising cost of living, and reducing the period necessary to advance in salary categories of eight to four years.

GM has announced that the workers who participated in the strike will return to their jobs in the next few hours.

Before this deal, GM was facing two simultaneous labor protests, one in Canada and another in the United States. In the US, the United Auto Workers (UAW) union has held strikes at two GM assembly plants and 18 parts distribution centers since September 15.

The Canadian union Unifor had started strikes at all three GM plants in Canada at one point, but this agreement has ended the strike.

“If we don’t get fairer offers, we’ll take this even further,” said Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers (UAW), in an exclusive interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation.” Fain argues that General Motors, Ford and Stellantis “have no excuse” for not resolving wage disputes, given their lucrative track records in recent years.

“We’ve been ignored for decades,” Fain added, underscoring the growing frustration of the workers he represents.

Talks between the union and the three Detroit giants resumed Saturday with the goal of ending the strike.

A UAW source told AFP on Saturday that they had “reasonably productive conversations with Ford today.”

Since Friday, three plants have remained inactive: one of General Motors in Wentzville (Missouri), another of Stellantis in Toledo (Ohio) and a Ford subsidiary in Wayne (Michigan).

“Stellantis and the UAW have reached a critical phase of negotiations,” declared the group that emerged from the 2021 merger between Fiat Chrysler and the French PSA Group.

Stellantis has improved its offer and proposes an increase of “almost 21 %” over the four years of the new collective agreement, compared to 14.5 % the previous week.

For Fain, a 21 % offer is far from enough, and he argues that employees deserve the same 40 % pay increase given to car company managers.

Discovery has revised its annual profit projections to a range of $300 million to $500 million, largely due to the impact of strikes by the screenwriters’ and actors’ unions in the United States. These strikes have been unleashed as a protest against the giant entertainment companies.

Initially, the company planned to reach an EBITDA (financial indicator before taxes, interest, depreciation and amortization) that would oscillate between 11,000 and 11,500 million dollars by the year 2023. However, in the latest update issued by Warner Bros. This Tuesday, this range has been adjusted to between 10,500 and 11,000 million dollars.

“Despite Warner Bros. Discovery’s confidence in an early resolution of these strikes, we cannot anticipate their end date. With both unions still on strike today, the company estimates the financial impact will persist through the end of 2023“, stated the company in its statement updating expectations for this year.

Notwithstanding these challenges, the blockbuster movie “Barbie,” which has grossed a staggering $1.4 billion worldwide, along with a decline in investment in movie and show production, is expected to increase the flow of free cash to a minimum of $5 billion, according to the report presented by Warner Bros. Discovery.

The company also reiterated its commitment to fairly resolve the strikes led by the Hollywood Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) and the Writers Guild (WGA), noting that it will adjust its projections should these strikes come to a head. end.

SAG-AFTRA joined the protests launched by the WGA on July 14 in their joint fight against the Alliance of American Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), in a strike that has paralyzed the American entertainment industry and that, so far, it shows little sign of resolution.

All this panorama of uncertainty is added to the massive layoffs carried out by large entertainment companies, including Warner Bros. Discovery, which cut 7,000 jobs at the end of May as part of its strategy to restore financial balance.

If the advertiser repeats the breach of the policies, in a period of 90 days, Google Adsense will send the first strike, which contains the temporary suspension of the account for 3 days, during which the ads will not be eligible to be published.

The second strike will be applied to those who repeat a violation of the same policy for which they received the first warning within 90 days. The account will be suspended for 7 days and your ads will not be published.

And the third strike will be granted to those who violate the same policy for which they received the second warning within 90 days after the previous strike. Thus, the account will be definitively suspended.

The company will be very clear with its warnings and each time a strike is issued, the advertiser will receive an email informing them of the violation. Additionally, Google affirms that its advertisers will have the right to appeal any decision regarding non-compliance with its policies.

Bukele has detailed that he is working with the Strike company to build an infrastructure for the use of Bitcoin, and that the bill would be sent this week to the Legislative Assembly, reports the Salvadoran newspaper El Mundo.

In this sense, the founder and CEO of Strike, Jack Mallers, stressed that this announcement will be “a shot heard around the world.”

“What is transformative here is that Bitcoin is both the largest reserve asset ever created and a superior monetary network. Holding Bitcoin provides a way to protect developing economies from potential inflation shocks,” he added.

This bill has yet to be reviewed by the Legislative Assembly, although the Salvadoran president maintains a similar majority in this chamber.
