Nicolás Maduro, President of Venezuela, issued a decree on Monday, September 29, declaring a state of external emergency, granting the government special powers to act in defense of the country against any threat.

Vice President Delcy Rodríguez chaired the National Council for Sovereignty and Peace, which was convened in response to the US military deployment in the Caribbean to combat drug trafficking.

In this context, Venezuela has taken a stance against any event considered a threat to sovereignty and the population.

The measure, which grants the head of state, among other powers, “special authority to mobilize the National Armed Forces (FANB) throughout the national territory, to take control of public utility infrastructure to guarantee its operation, to control the oil industry and basic industries, to activate citizen security plans, to deploy the People’s Militia as part of the integrated national defense system, and to close land, sea, and air borders to protect territorial integrity and the population,” was announced through social media and local media outlets.
