Paraguay has become the first country in Latin America to sign a Safe Third Country agreement with the United States, meaning that Paraguayans currently on US soil will be able to apply for protection from their country of origin.

This was announced on Thursday, August 14, in a statement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who heads the State Department. He emphasized that this agreement generates benefits for both countries, such as “sharing the burden of managing illegal immigration” and “ending the abuse of the asylum system” in the United States.

Rubio thanked President Santiago Peña in the statement, emphasizing the importance of the efforts as a partner in deterring illegal immigration and protecting the borders.

The agreement is the first signed by President Donald Trump in his second term, during which he has toughened his immigration policy.

The US State Department increased its ‘Do Not Travel’ list to 80 % of the world’s countries, due to what it considers “an unprecedented risk for travelers” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The list does not prohibit travels, but makes a recommendation on avoiding visits to those places that it considers dangerous. The list consisted of 34 countries and now it rises to a total of 130.

Some of the countries that were already on the list are Chad, Kosovo, Kenya, Brazil, Argentina, Haiti, Mozambique, Russia or Tanzania. Now that list is expanded when considering that the risk grew in practically the whole world.

The expansion of travel recommendations and precautions from the United States to 80 % of the world’s countries is justified “not by a reassessment of the current health situation in a given country, but rather reflects an adjustment in the travel recommendation system of the Department of Status to build more on existing epidemiological evaluations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)”.

The State Department notes that “the COVID-19 pandemic continues to present unprecedented risks for travelers. In light of those risks, the State Department strongly recommends that US citizens reconsider all travel abroad,” the note said.
