The announcement was made in conjunction with T-Mobile during the recent edition of the SuperBowl. It highlights the fact that SpaceX already has more than 7,000 Starlink satellites in operation; 450 of them are Direct to Cell.

“In addition to offering broadband Internet, these satellites function as telephone towers in space. When a T-Mobile Starlink user loses coverage, their phone will connect directly to the satellites that are passing overhead, and these will talk to each other to forward messages to a ground station.”

The service currently offers text messaging. But it is expected to soon offer voice calling options and data services.

The SpaceX company, owned by Elon Musk, “has shown that even video calls are feasible with Starlink Direct to Cell, but more satellites will be needed in orbit for the company to be able to offer widespread use of this type of complex service.”

Regarding the costs that users will have to pay starting in July, it is known that “T-Mobile customers will have to pay $15 per month to not be left without signal in areas without coverage ($10 per month if they take advantage of the exit offer). Customers of other operators will pay much more: $20 per month without discounts.”

The Starlink company is working to provide rural and urban areas with a connection that is 25 times faster than the current one, which ranges between 50 and 100 Mbps.

In this sense, Gwynne Shotwell, president of SpaceX, recently explained that “the next generation of satellites will have smaller and higher-capacity light beams, which will reduce latency and improve speed.”

Of course, for this ambitious plan, Starlink will have to make a significant investment and expand its fleet of satellites in orbit, which currently exceeds 6,000 satellites. Musk aims to increase this fleet to 30,000.

SpaceX has not revealed details of how it hopes to increase Starlink’s speed to 2 Gb. What is certain is that it will have to face different challenges on the road “towards more advanced and accessible connectivity.”

The fine that Musk has had to pay stems from the litigation for the social network’s failure to comply with the order issued by Judge Alexandre de Moraes to block accounts in the country that, according to the authority, promoted disinformation and spread hate messages.

However, the Bar Association challenged the decision of the Supreme Court. The Brazilian Attorney General’s Office argued on September 12 that the ban on social network X in Brazil does not violate the right to freedom of expression.

The PGR also declared that the lawsuits against the ban on X in Brazil lack legal grounds, so the suspension remains in place in the country.

Attempts to access the site through a web browser or through the application were met with an error message this Saturday.

The blockade came after Brazil’s Supreme Court on Friday ordered the suspension of X, because Musk refused to appoint a legal representative in the country.

Brazilian law requires companies operating in the jurisdiction to have legal representation. But X, formerly known as Twitter, closed its Brazilian representative office on August 17 after Judge Alexandre de Moraes threatened to prosecute its local representatives for their reluctance to comply with orders to block users.

The dispute widened this Friday when the Supreme Court denied an appeal by satellite internet company Starlink – also owned by Musk – to unfreeze its financial accounts, according to CNN Brazil.

The controversy and case also entangles Starlink

The financial accounts of Starlink, an internet service provider that the tech billionaire also owns through SpaceX, were frozen in the country on Thursday to ensure payment of fines imposed as part of legal disputes involving X.

Starlink is used by more than 250,000 people in Brazil, according to SpaceX. The service, which does not require a cable connection, is especially popular in the Amazon rainforest and remote rural locations, and is used daily by academics, tour operators and public officials in the region, as well as Brazilian Army units deployed there.

During Starlink’s appeal, the company argued that it is not a party to the case against X, and that the order to freeze its accounts violates its basic property rights.

Musk announced that the Starlink service will remain active for free

Late Thursday, Musk said the Starlink service will remain active for free since the company cannot receive payments due to the court order.

“Many remote schools and hospitals depend on SpaceX’s Starlink!” wrote Musk in X.

Musk, a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist” who also heads electric vehicle maker Tesla, has repeatedly claimed that De Moraes’ actions amount to censorship.

Other opinions favorable to De Moraes affirm that his actions against X have been legal, have had the support of the majority of the members of the court, and have served to protect democracy at a time when it is threatened.

For many, the judicial and controversial case is soaked or sprinkled with political-ideological struggle between right and left.

Starlink is a division of SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, designed to create an interconnected network of orbital satellites with which it hopes to provide the internet to all areas of the world and that even those with less coverage can connect to the network.

With the Direct to Cell service the company plans to offer mobile connectivity, with “seamless access to text messages, voice and data for LTE phones worldwide” without having to change the ‘hardware’ or ‘firmware’ of these devices, as specified on their website.

In this, the company has established the scheduled deadlines for the launch of its mobile coverage service, which will begin in 2024 with the possibility of sending text messages. A year later, in 2025, it will add support for voice calls, data, and IoT devices.

SpaceX has also commented that Direct to Cell capable satellites feature an eNodeB modem that acts as a cell tower in space, “enabling network integration similar to that of a standard roaming partner.”

Thus, it has been announced that Direct to Cell will reach the telephone providers T-Mobile, Rodgers, both in the United States, KDDI (Japan), Opto (Australia), One NZ (New Zealand) and Sal (Switzerland).

The technology firm has also indicated that it is taking advantage of its experience in manufacturing and launching the “most advanced rockets and spacecraft in the world” to carry out this satellite connectivity project at scale.

The Direct to Cell satellites will initially launch on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and then on Starship. Once in orbit, they will immediately connect to the Starlink constellation to provide global connectivity.

Satellite telephony occupied one of the panels at the “Satellite Conference and Exhibition 2023” conference, which is being held this week in Washington (United States), and which was attended by SpaceX’s Vice President of Business Sales for Starlink, Jonathan Hofeller.

Hofeller explained that Starlink, the Internet service, already has more than a million users, and that the aerospace company manufactures six next-generation satellites and a thousand user terminals every day.

The manager also took advantage of the meeting to confirm that the company plans to “start testing” Starlink’s satellite transmission service to mobile devices this year.

This announcement follows the one already made by SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, last year, when he announced that they already had the first prototype of a Starlink 2.0 satellite seven meters long and weighing 1.25 tons.

The new “Fair Use Policy” that Starlink is going to apply to residential services establishes monthly limits on the amount of data that users can consume at high speed, which means that once they exceed them, they will experience a reduction in the speed of connection for the remainder of the billing period.

Starlink offers home users a certain amount of data for priority access each month. Specifically, it identifies this priority access during peak hours, between 07:00 and 23:00 and with a maximum limit of 1TB.

Once that amount of data is consumed, users will experience basic access which, when there is congestion on the network, will reduce connection speed and performance. The company already warns that this may affect the experience in third-party services and applications that make intensive use of this resource, such as broadcasts.

From Starlink they clarify that “in areas that are not congested or at times of little use, users should not notice any difference in performance between Priority and Basic Access during normal use”, as explained on their website.

For users who have exhausted the amount of data available in priority access, the company offers the option to purchase additional data at a high speed, which charges 0.25 cents per GB.

This change in the “Fair Use Policy” for residential services is not “at this time” available in the Spanish market, but it already applies to users in the United States.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk teased the development and early details of Starlink V2 at the end of May in a walkthrough featured on the Everyday Astronaut YouTube channel.

So, without giving many details about its next launch, the businessman acknowledged that they already had the first prototype of a Starlink 2.0 satellite seven meters long and weighing 1.25 tons.

Now, the businessman announced that the second iteration of his satellite Internet service will arrive in 2023, as he indicated on his Twitter profile.

This service will be characterized mainly by its ability to transmit the network directly to the phones of its users, with the aim of being able to eliminate all “dead zones” and offer Internet to any corner of the world.

The most recent flight was carried out internally for its sister company Starlink, with the aim of placing 53 satellites in orbit to strengthen the company’s internal telecommunications network to add a total of 2,300 satellites floating in space that allow it to offer its Internet.

The launch was recently carried out from Space Launch Complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, since that flight an important mark was broken because it is “the most times the same propellant has been reused of SpaceX Falcon rocket to date.

The 53 Starlink satellites were moved by the Falcon 9 and its booster returned to the ground virtually intact to be ready for its next mission, which would add its 13th mission. In its history, the device has several important distinctions, such as “the 2020 Crew Dragon Demo-2 mission with a new capsule with a crew inside.”

Celebrating two decades of success

The private space company SpaceX celebrated its first 20 years of history and during the celebration took stock of its triumphs, as well as some failures and are currently in a “critical period full of achievements, where the milestones seem to begin to accumulate one to one.”

The stories about the possibility of carrying out explorations with the Falcon 9 rocket remained in the past.
