The United States is testing free cell phone connection to Starlink satellites. Starting in July, it will become a paid service, for any Smartphone, from any operator, with eSIM.

The announcement was made in conjunction with T-Mobile during the recent edition of the SuperBowl. It highlights the fact that SpaceX already has more than 7,000 Starlink satellites in operation; 450 of them are Direct to Cell.

“In addition to offering broadband Internet, these satellites function as telephone towers in space. When a T-Mobile Starlink user loses coverage, their phone will connect directly to the satellites that are passing overhead, and these will talk to each other to forward messages to a ground station.”

The service currently offers text messaging. But it is expected to soon offer voice calling options and data services.

The SpaceX company, owned by Elon Musk, “has shown that even video calls are feasible with Starlink Direct to Cell, but more satellites will be needed in orbit for the company to be able to offer widespread use of this type of complex service.”

Regarding the costs that users will have to pay starting in July, it is known that “T-Mobile customers will have to pay $15 per month to not be left without signal in areas without coverage ($10 per month if they take advantage of the exit offer). Customers of other operators will pay much more: $20 per month without discounts.”

In this, the company has established the scheduled deadlines for the launch of its mobile coverage service, which will begin in 2024 with the possibility of sending text messages. A year later, in 2025, it will add support for voice calls, data, and IoT devices.

SpaceX has also commented that Direct to Cell capable satellites feature an eNodeB modem that acts as a cell tower in space, “enabling network integration similar to that of a standard roaming partner.”

Thus, it has been announced that Direct to Cell will reach the telephone providers T-Mobile, Rodgers, both in the United States, KDDI (Japan), Opto (Australia), One NZ (New Zealand) and Sal (Switzerland).

Starlink offers home users a certain amount of data for priority access each month. Specifically, it identifies this priority access during peak hours, between 07:00 and 23:00 and with a maximum limit of 1TB.

Once that amount of data is consumed, users will experience basic access which, when there is congestion on the network, will reduce connection speed and performance. The company already warns that this may affect the experience in third-party services and applications that make intensive use of this resource, such as broadcasts.

From Starlink they clarify that “in areas that are not congested or at times of little use, users should not notice any difference in performance between Priority and Basic Access during normal use”, as explained on their website.

For users who have exhausted the amount of data available in priority access, the company offers the option to purchase additional data at a high speed, which charges 0.25 cents per GB.

This change in the “Fair Use Policy” for residential services is not “at this time” available in the Spanish market, but it already applies to users in the United States.
